Cancun has once again set new records for the highest numbers of Covid-19 cases since the pandemic began. The governor of Quintana Roo, Carlos Joaquín announced at a press conference that Benito Juárez, where Cancún is located is peaking at its highest levels yet.
“The Cancun area has the highest peak in the entire history of COVID.” stated Carlos Joaquín. “It has the highest number of cases since the pandemic began in Quintana Roo, at 70 cases per day it has the highest number of positive cases during the entire pandemic.”
New Measures To Help Reduce Infections
The state of Quintana Roo will remain at the ‘Orange’ warning level which is the second highest alert the state gives. Last week, the Governor warned if cases continue to rise, the state will revert back to the ‘Red’ alert.
Joaquín stated that sanitary checkpoints would be set up at all high congestion areas such Punta Cancun and the areas with a high concentrations of discos and bars. These checkpoints also known as ‘sanitary filters’ take the temperatures of people entering, check for the proper use of masks and visitors could be subject to random Covid-19 rapid testing.
A group called the ‘Yellow Caps‘ have also been deployed by the state. The group will be stationed at busy tourist locations to remind visitors to maintain social distancing and wear a mask at all times in public.
While the yellow caps focus on education rather than fining visitors, state officials are asking tourists to help prevent Covid-19 and will only use fines for those who refuse to follow protocols.
Inspectors will also be out at busy hotels, restaurants and cafes to ensure that businesses are following all prevention protocols. Officials have closed down multiple businesses in past weeks for violating capacity measures.
State Secretariat of Tourism (Sedetur) Will Be Involved In Prevention
In an interview, the Secretary of Tourism, Marisol Vanegas Pérez stated that the State Secretariat of Tourism (Sedetur) will be carrying out multiple programs with tourists to assist with Covid-19 prevention.
The first is being information and education for visitors to not let their guard down while visiting the resort city of Cancun.
“We have a communication and awareness strategy for tourists. We are helping them stay informed,” Pérez stated.
Sedetur will also be in communication with hotels to identify tourists who have tested positive during the mandatory antigen testing needed to return home to the U.S. These tourists will be segregated to areas of the hotel that have been designated as quarantine zones.
The State Secretariat of Tourism will also roll out informational campaigns at major resorts to inform tourists of the rules at the current Orange level.
The state of Quintana Roo will remain at the orange alert in the north and south zones from May 17 to 23. The Governor is reminding the community and visitors to stay vigilant. “It is everyone’s responsibility to maintain prevention habits,” Joaquín concluded.
The use of face masks is enforced all public areas including outdoors with the exception of beaches.
