Globetrotters planning a summer trip to Cancun this year are in for a treat with the launching of a new bus route to Belize, a stunning yet underrated Caribbean destination just south of the Mexican Caribbean state of Quintana Roo.
The new route was officially launched by ADO, the largest bus company in the Mexican Caribbean, and is expected to considerably boost travel options to the English-speaking country.
With Belize increasingly on travelers’ radars, here’s how Cancun travelers can benefit from the new bus route.
Explore Belize’s Tropical Wonders With ADO
Before the pandemic, countless Mexican Caribbean travelers ventured off the beaten path to visit Belize, a small country south of the region. But for several years, officials enacted strict border controls to stop the spread of the virus, effectively removing any chance to visit the stunning destination.
With the border now open, Belize is once again appearing on travelers’ itineraries, and growing demand has prompted ADO to launch a new terrestrial route from Cancun to the tropical destination.

The new route officially began operating this week with one daily departure at 7:10 a.m. from Cancun’s main bus station, with the return departure scheduled at 7 p.m. from Belize City.
The entire trip from Cancun to Belize takes around seven hours. Although the lengthy journey means travelers will have to spend some time in traffic and go through border controls, it opens up new possibilities to explore one of the Caribbean’s best-kept secrets.
According to Julio García, head of mobility for ADO, the transportation company will increase frequencies on the basis of demand.
And with travelers increasingly leaving their resorts to explore the Mexican Caribbean and beyond, it’s likely the firm will add more departures.
One-way tickets are currently on sale for around $67 per person, making this one of the cheapest ways to reach Belize.
ADO offers 44 seats on its Belize route, and although far from the luxury of private transfers, the company is known for its inexpensive and comfortable ride experience.
Travelers can purchase tickets on ADO’s official website.
Why Travelers Are Excited About Belize
Much like the Mexican Caribbean state of Quintana Roo, Belize was under the control and influence of the Mayan civilization, and is home to some of the most impressive ancient ruins in the region.

But unlike hotspots like Tulum or Chichen Itzá, Belize is comparatively quiet and lesser-known, offering travelers some amazing opportunities for historical and cultural tourism.
Its most famous Mayan ruins include the Xunantunich Mayan Ruins, located some 70 miles west of the capital of Belize City. The ancient city was once home to up to 200,000 people, and several impressive monuments remain well-preserved to date. Travelers can explore six plazas, 26 temples, and the 40-meter-tall Castillo pyramid.
Other must-see historical attractions include the Lamanai Archaeological Reserve in northern Belize as well as the Caracol Natural Monument Reservation, which boasts the tallest manmade structure in the country.

But Belize is also trending for its breathtaking nature. Despite its modest size of just over 20,000 square kilometers, Belize is home to several natural wonders, most notably the Great Blue Hole, which was named one of the 10 most amazing places on Earth by the Discovery Channel.
Belize is an excellent addition to any Mexican Caribbean itinerary and is generally a safe destination with declining crime rates. And with English being the official language, getting around is a breeze.
