We see “Top 10” lists pop up every other day in the travel world. Sometimes they make sense, and sometimes you wonder if the person writing them has ever actually left their basement. But when Tripadvisor drops its annual Travelers’ Choice Awards, we pay attention.
Why? Because it’s not just one editor’s opinion. It’s based on millions of reviews from real travelers—people who actually booked the flights, slept in the beds, and ate the tacos.
Tripadvisor just released its “Best of the Best Destinations in Mexico for 2026,” and I wasn’t surprised to see our heavy hitters on the list. Cancun and Tulum both secured spots in the top 5, cementing the Mexican Caribbean as the absolute go-to region for another year.

Here is our take on why they made the cut, and which one is actually right for your next trip.
Cancun (#2): The King of Convenience
Cancun landed at the #2 spot this year (just behind Cabo San Lucas), and honestly, it deserves it.
I know, I know—Cancun has that “Spring Break” reputation that it just can’t seem to shake. But if you read the actual reviews that pushed it to the top of this list, you’ll see the narrative is changing. Travelers aren’t just coming here to party anymore; they are coming because it’s easy.
Tripadvisor highlighted Cancun for its “drama-free family resorts” and the fact that it offers a lot more culture than people give it credit for.

Our Take:
I tell friends this all the time: Cancun is the “plug-and-play” vacation. You land, you grab a margarita, and you are on the beach in 30 minutes. You don’t have to think.
- The Culture Fix: The list shouted out the Museo Maya de Cancun. I’ve been, and it’s genuinely cool—a great way to get a dose of history without trekking three hours into the jungle. If you don’t have time to visit other ruins further out, this is a perfect spot since it sits in the southern part of the hotel zone. I’d spend 1-2 hours here if it is your first time, and be sure to say hi to all the iguanas outside!
- The Vibe: It’s polished. If you want strong WiFi, perfect air conditioning, and a pool waiter who anticipates your needs, Cancun is your spot. There are so many resort options there is 100% something for everyone here.
Tulum (#5): The Adventure Capital
Coming in at #5 is Tulum. If Cancun is the polished older sibling, Tulum is the cool, slightly wild cousin who does yoga at sunrise.
Tripadvisor praised Tulum specifically for its unique mix of history and nature—mentioning the iconic ruins that sit right over the ocean and the incredible cenote systems like Dos Ojos.

Our Take:
Tulum is for the traveler who refuses to stay in the hotel room. I love it because it feels alive. You aren’t just looking at the ocean; you are swimming through underground caves or biking to a beach club.
That said, a dose of reality is needed here as well. Many Americans are passing on Tulum lately due to high prices & transportation issues. Tulum is trying to regain its former glory, and has plans to improve. Be sure to do your research before visiting, it is still a gem!
- The Ruins: Yes, they are crowded, but seeing El Castillo against the backdrop of the turquoise Caribbean Sea never gets old. It’s one of the few views that actually lives up to the postcard. This was actually one of my first ever experiences outside of the country a million years ago when I was 21 and on my honeymoon. It is a really cool experience to walk through the ruins, and absolutely worth getting a good guide for.
- The Eco-Factor: The mention of LabnaHa Eco Park is spot on. If you want to swim in a “sacred cavern” under a canopy of stalactites, this is where you go.

The “Neighbors” Getting Some Love
What makes this region so dominant isn’t just the big two. I was stoked to see Cozumel (#7) and Bacalar (#8) make the top 10 as well.
- Cozumel is world-class for diving (seriously, the reefs are like a storybook).
- Bacalar is the “Lagoon of Seven Colors.” If you haven’t been, imagine the Maldives, but without the 20-hour flight and the $10,000 price tag.

So, Which One Should You Choose?
Since I’m down here all the time, people always ask me: “Cancun or Tulum?”
Here is my cheat sheet:
- Choose Cancun if: You have kids, you want a seamless “all-inclusive” experience, or you just want to turn your brain off and relax. It’s reliable, safe, and incredibly convenient.
- Choose Tulum if: You are traveling with a partner or friends, you want to take cool photos, and you care more about “vibes” and eco-adventures than 24/7 room service.
