Cancun, Mexico – Get your sunglasses ready, beach lovers! Cancun’s stunning Hotel Zone coastline, with a special spotlight on the iconic Playa Delfines (you know, the one with the giant colorful “CANCUN” sign!), has just received an extensive deep clean. Think of it as a spa day for our shores, ensuring they’re more breathtaking than ever for your upcoming vacation!
Recently, a fantastic team effort led by Cancun’s Mayor, Ana Paty Peralta, saw a flurry of activity at Playa Delfines. But this wasn’t your average Tuesday; the Mayor was joined by an enthusiastic brigade of students and teachers from the French Institute, all rolling up their sleeves to promote a super important message: let’s keep our paradise pristine!

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work!
“At City Hall, we work every day to keep our beaches clean,” Mayor Peralta shared, “but when there are more hands, more people who love this place as much as you do, the results are better!” And she’s not kidding! It was a fantastic sight, seeing locals, students, and officials working side-by-side, all for the love of Cancun.
The head of Public Services, José Antonio de la Torre Chambé, echoed this sentiment, explaining that while beach protection is a constant job, getting the community involved, especially on weekends, really helps drive home the message of conservation. It’s all about creating awareness so everyone can play a part.

So, What Exactly Did They Tackle?
Hold onto your sombreros, because the stats are impressive! Between October 2024 and May 2025, the dedicated crews at Playa Delfines alone have:
- Collected a whopping 372.90 cubic meters of sargassum (that’s the seaweed that sometimes visits our shores).
- Cleared 14.5 cubic meters of seagrass.
- Meticulously sifted 231,156 square meters of sand – that’s like giving the beach a giant comb-through to keep it soft and lovely.
- Scraped and raked an incredible 3,305,348.94 square meters to remove litter.
During this recent cleanup, the volunteers, including Mayor Peralta herself, got stuck in, collecting a surprising amount of bottle caps, plastics, pesky straws, microplastics, and other bits of rubbish that don’t belong on our beautiful beaches. They also did some cool “screening and transect work,” which is a fancy way of saying they gathered data to keep an eye on the beach’s health.

“Cancún Somos Todos” – Cancun Is All Of Us!
A highlight of the day was when students Xiomara Cázares and Emiliano Báez presented the “Cancún somos todos” decalogue. Think of it as a “Top 10 Awesome Tourist Guide” for caring for our environment, respecting our amazing wildlife (hello, sea turtles!), and promoting good habits that keep Cancun beautiful.
Before everyone got their hands sandy, there were also some super informative chats about important topics like the sargassum season (so you know what to expect and how the city manages it), the incredible sea turtle nesting season (and how we protect these gentle creatures), what it means for a beach to have a “Blue Flag” certification (it’s a big deal for quality and cleanliness!), and the general A-to-Z of beach care.

What Does This Mean For Your Vacation?
Simply put: cleaner, more beautiful beaches for you to enjoy!
- Pristine Sands: All that sifting and raking means the sand is softer and cleaner for your sunbathing sessions and sandcastle masterpieces.
- Clearer Waters: Removing sargassum and litter helps keep the water inviting.
- Protected Wildlife: A cleaner beach is a safer home for marine life, including those adorable sea turtles that often nest along our shores.

How Can You Be an Awesome Cancun Visitor?
We’re so glad you asked! Keeping Cancun gorgeous is a team effort, and visitors play a HUGE role. Here are a few easy-peasy ways to help:
- Bin It!: This is the golden rule. If you bring it to the beach, make sure it goes into a bin. If bins are full, be a superstar and take your trash back to your hotel to dispose of it properly.
- Say No to Single-Use Plastics: Where possible, opt for reusable water bottles and bags. Every little bit helps reduce plastic waste.
- Respect the Wildlife: Admire turtles and other marine life from a distance. Never touch nesting turtles or their eggs. Follow guidelines if you’re lucky enough to see them!
- Leave Only Footprints: Take all your belongings with you when you leave the beach.
- Spread the Word: Encourage your travel buddies to be mindful too! The “Cancún somos todos” spirit is contagious.

So, pack your bags and get ready to enjoy the sparkling, refreshed beaches of Cancun! A lot of hard work and love goes into keeping them this beautiful, and with everyone doing their small part, we can ensure this paradise stays perfect for years to come.
