Cozumel started becoming a popular Mexican vacation destination way back in the 1960s and has continued to grow in popularity since.

Only now has it finally reached one of the most coveted statuses in Mexico, though, to be named a Magic Town, which designates a place as having significant cultural, historical, or natural value.

And now Cozumel has officially been named the newest Magic Town near Cancun, as just announced by the Secretary of Tourism.

What Is A Magic Town?

A Magic Town, or Pueblo Magico, is designated by the Mexican government and is chosen based on having certain qualities, a program that began in 2001.

Some Magic Towns are chosen because they represent authenticity and Mexican culture.

Other towns are given the prestigious dedication because they have an abundance of natural attractions.

And some Magical Towns are chosen because they tell the story of the town, region, or country through history.

Magic Towns In Mexico

Currently, there are only around 132 Magic Towns in all of Mexico, scattered between a number of different states.

To be designated as a Magic Town, the destination must have 5,000 or more residents, an application has to be filed, and a plan for the development of tourism must be made and agreed upon.

After forming a Pueblo Magico committee to deal with all of the steps to get Magic Town status, that committee must continue with and maintain the tourism development plan, to draw in tourists from all over the world.

Mexican Caribbean Magic Towns

In Quintana Roo, which is the state in which both Cozumel and Cancun are, there are now four Magic Towns, including Cozumel.

The other Pueblo Magicos in the region are Tulum, Isla Mujeres, and Bacalar.

Tulum became a Magic Town in 2015, as did Isla Mujeres, and Bacalar was awarded the status in 2006.

So it’s been eight years since a new town in the beautiful Mexican Caribbean has been recognized as a Magic Town.

The Tourist Destination Of Cozumel

Cozumel is a stunning island off the coast of Playa del Carmen.

It is mostly known for its white sand beaches and turquoise blue water, but it has even more to offer.

Culture, nature, great restaurants, all-inclusive resorts and boutique hotels, beautiful beaches, and more.

Why Cozumel Is So Special

Cozumel is also an extremely popular scuba diving location due to being so close to part of the Mesoamerican Reef located at Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park.

Cozumel is also where you will find the Museo Subacuático de Arte, which is an underwater museum full of sculptures.

But perhaps one of the best things to experience in Cozumel is the island’s authentic downtown area, where you’ll find quaint little shops and fantastic eateries.
