Delta became the latest U.S. airline to announce a new nonstop route from Detroit to Tulum starting this winter as the southern Mexican Caribbean destination skyrockets in popularity with travelers.
Delta will begin operating the new connection on January 11, 2025, as the airline shifts its focus to warm resort destinations across Mexico.
Since the opening of the Felipe Carrillo International Airport last December, Tulum has soared in popularity with visitors, who now have more options than ever to reach the historical hotspot.
With that in mind, here’s what travelers have to know about Delta’s new Tulum service.
Detroit To Connect Midwest Travelers With Tulum As Delta Eyes Mexican Caribbean
Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean will be more popular than ever in 2024 as the region shatters multiple travel records.
With Cancun quickly filling up with travelers, hotspots across the region have seen demand skyrocket.
That’s particularly true for Tulum, the premier historical and cultural destination in the Mexican Caribbean.
Home to the largest Mayan ruins in the state, the coastal city is all the rage with travelers this year.
As travel volumes grow, airlines are increasingly targeting the sunny destination, announcing a host of new flights to meet demand.
This week, Delta became the latest major carrier to reveal new nonstop flights to Tulum starting this winter.
The groundbreaking route will be operated between the midwestern hub of Detroit, linking the region’s large metropolis with Tulum.
Delta’s nonstop service is the first-ever to connect Detroit to Tulum.
Detroit now joins a growing list of U.S. cities that will see non-stop connections to Tulum.
Among other cities, Delta will soon fly nonstop from Minneapolis to the Mexican Caribbean hotspot, signaling a strategic shift in the carrier’s route map.
All in all, Delta will operate 10 weekly flights from U.S. airports to Tulum, making the Mexican Caribbean resort destination a competitive choice compared to Cancun or other cities in the country.
Delta is yet to reveal departure slots for the new Detroit – Tulum route, nor which type of aircraft the carrier intends to use on the service.
Delta’s new Tulum connection is part of a wider push to connect the United States to growing Mexican resort hotspots. These hotspots have seen their popularity soar as travelers head south in search of sea and sun.
Tulum stands out as one of the more alluring destinations in Mexico for U.S. travelers.
Previously only reached by car or private transfer, the opening of the city’s new international airport allows thousands of travelers to reach the growing hotspot daily.
Tulum’s state-of-the-art Felipe Carrillo International Airport can handle up to five million passengers annually.
While that number is significantly below that of Cancun International Airport, Tulum’s new airport is expected to ease passenger congestion in Cancun as more travelers opt for the southern hotspot.
With its excellent white-sand beaches – recently recognized the best in Latin America – coupled with its historical significance and growing selection of luxury resorts, Tulum is poised to become one of the leading destinations in the region.
The launching of the Maya Train later this year is expected to boost travel numbers in Tulum, with the city carrying out a host of investments to gear up for a record-breaking winter travel season.
