Ditch The Crowds! Travelers Are Loving This Sargassum-Free Paradise South Of Cancun

Last Updated

Sargassum seaweed is known to plague the Mexican Caribbean coastline each summer, releasing an unpleasant stench and scaring travelers away.

But this summer, sargassum levels have remained unusually low, prompting thousands of sun-seeking travelers to enjoy white-sand beaches across the region.

One particularly popular destination that offers picture-perfect waters is Bacalar, a booming hotspot several hours south of Cancun.

Travelers Flock To Experience Natural Wonders In Bacalar

Aside from Cancun, which remains by far the most popular destination for travelers in the Mexican Caribbean, several other resort hotspots are trending with travelers this summer.

One of them is Bacalar, an eco-cultural destination primarily known for its magnificent lagoons, with the Lagoon of Seven Colors widely recognized as one of the most prominent attractions in all of Quintana Roo.

Bacalar’s freshwater lagoons and countless cenotes are proving to be particularly popular with travelers this summer, offering respite from the sweltering heat and the ever-present sargassum threat.

In fact, Bacalar is currently the most sought-after destination in the Grand Costa Maya tourism corridor, with over 60% of all hotel rooms sold out in the trendy destination.

That figure is up by over 8% compared to last year, a sign that travelers are shifting towards more eco-friendly accommodation options.

Although smaller accommodations and boutique hotels predominate Bacalar’s hospitality scene, travelers can find a wide range of hotels for all price points.

Travelers can also book guided tours, which offer great value for money. Some popular choices include this top-rated boat tour of the Bacalar Lagoon as well as a nearby cenote.

At just $33 per person, the price is hard to beat.

How To Reach Bacalar From Cancun

Despite being surrounded by nature, Bacalar is anything but inaccessible. Cancun travelers have several options to reach the quaint destination, including bus, plane, or private transfer.

For a cost-effective option, use ADO, the premier bus company in the Mexican Caribbean.

A one-way ticket costs around $20 per person and the ride lasts between five to six hours.

From Bacalar station, take a taxi to your accommodation or arrange a private transfer.

Bacalar will also have a stop along the Maya Train’s southern section, which will connect Cancun and Playa del Carmen to Tulum & Chetumal.

The track is currently under construction and is expected to be finished by mid-September.
