Do Cancun Tourists Need To Worry About Increasing Power Outages? Here Is The Real Truth

Share The Article

We get it—seeing “blackout” and “Cancún” in the same sentence can make any traveler nervous.

As we at The Cancun Sun keep a close eye on local infrastructure and hotel operations, here’s the real truth: for almost all visitors, power hiccups are a non-event.

Most major resorts are built to keep the vacation vibes going even when the grid blinks, and simple planning keeps the rest stress-free.

Cancun Resorts Setting Up Generators To Fight Blackouts This Summer (1)

What actually happened this week?

On the night of Monday, August 18, parts of the Hotel Zone experienced a brief outage that even paused the La Isla Ferris wheel for a bit.

Industry voices said the main impact was guest concern—not trip-ruining chaos—and stressed that about 95% of Hotel Zone properties have backup generators.

That’s a big reason guests rarely feel more than a momentary flicker.

So…should you worry?

Short answer: usually no.

When blackouts do happen, they tend to be short and localized, and resorts flip to generators quickly. We covered a similar incident in the spring and saw the same pattern: visitors at big properties barely noticed while the power company stabilized the grid.

If you’re at a large or luxury hotel, odds are excellent your lights, AC, and Wi-Fi stay on. (See our note on a brief March outage and why big resorts were “well-equipped with back-up electricity.”)

What Is An 'Ultra-Luxury' All-Inclusive In Cancun The Insiders Guide To How These Resorts Work

Why are there more headlines about outages?

Cancún is booming, and peak heat drives electricity use sky-high. Add rapid growth in hotels, real-estate, and vacation rentals, and the grid is under pressure, especially during hot stretches. Local reports even highlight the sheer number of short-term rentals now drawing power—6,732 in Cancún and 7,938 in Playa del Carmen—plus normal seasonal demand spikes.

The good news? The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) is upgrading the system. Plans this year include installing capacitor banks in seven northern Quintana Roo substations (think of these as stability boosters for voltage) and expanding key substations to keep pace with growth.

Those projects are aimed precisely at reducing flickers and improving reliability across tourist corridors.

How to make sure your stay is outage-proof

  • Pick power-savvy stays. If you want the smoothest experience in peak season, prioritize full-service resorts. They typically maintain robust generators and have clear continuity plans. When Tulum dealt with rolling blackouts, we even advised travelers to opt for resorts over smaller rentals for this reason. The same logic can apply in Cancún during the hottest weeks.
  • Ask two quick questions before booking.
    1. “Do you have a backup generator that supports guest rooms, elevators, and AC?”
    2. “Do you have surge protection for in-room outlets?”
Properties ready with confident answers are the ones that keep your vacation seamless.
  • Travel with tiny insurance. A portable power bank, offline boarding passes, and downloaded maps are low-effort backups you’ll probably never need—but they’re priceless if the lights blink during check-in.
  • Know the season—and your resort’s plan. Peak storm months don’t automatically mean outages, but it’s smart to know your hotel’s protocol. Start with our fresh guide on what to expect as peak hurricane season begins (spoiler: Cancún is one of the most prepared sun destinations on earth).
  • Storm season ≠ trip over. Even when rain rolls through, resorts follow well-rehearsed playbooks to keep guests comfortable, and the city maintains designated shelters if officials ever need them. We’ve reported on shelter prep in the Hotel Zone and a practical storm-season explainer so you can plan smart and relax.
How Safe Are Resorts In Cancun Here's What Travelers Are Saying Right Now

So… are power outages a thing in Cancún?

Occasionally—big, fast-growing destinations do see them. But for 99% of travelers, they’re a minor blip. Hotels here treat continuity like a core amenity, with generators ready to roll and teams trained for quick pivots.

Meanwhile, CFE’s upgrade projects should reduce the headlines over time. If you choose a well-equipped resort, ask two quick pre-arrival questions, and pack a power bank, you’ll almost certainly never think about the grid again—except when the lights are twinkling over the lagoon at sunset.
