Former Cancún Mayor Carlos Canabal Escapes House Arrest

Carlos Canabal, who was the interim mayor of Cancún from 2004 to 2005, has escaped from house arrest in Nuevo León. His current location is unknown. This escape happened even though there were warnings that he might flee if he was allowed house arrest and if his electronic tracking device was removed.

A legal representative for the company LV had pointed out this risk. The company claims to have been financially affected by a former official, Xavier Olea Trueheart, in the amount of $27.25 million USD (531 million pesos). This warning was given when Canabal’s lawyers requested house arrest for him, stating that he was unwell.

House arrest was granted on the condition that Canabal wear an electronic bracelet and have constant police supervision. However, it has been reported that the former mayor left his house on April 26th. This became public knowledge on Wednesday, May 7th, at which point a judge immediately issued an order for his re-arrest.

Details of the Escape and the Fugitive

Carlos Canabal, who was born in Tabasco and owns the newspaper La Verdad in states like Yucatán and Quintana Roo, is now considered a fugitive. He has also faced complaints himself, with allegations of unfair job dismissals and failure to pay Social Security and staff properly.

Eduardo Hernández, a judge in Nuevo León, officially declared Canabal a fugitive and issued the re-arrest order. This followed Canabal’s departure from his apartment, located in San Pedro Garza García. He had been arrested in Tulum in February 2024 and was later placed under house arrest.

What Are the Accusations Against Him?

During his time as interim mayor of Cancún, Carlos Canabal’s actions were controversial. He has been linked to the alleged illegal taking of many plots of land and properties within the city. The specifics of these allegations have not been detailed in this report.

The escape of a former mayor who was facing serious accusations has raised questions about the use of house arrest, especially when electronic monitoring is removed despite clear risks of flight. Authorities are now looking for Carlos Canabal to bring him back into custody for legal proceedings.
