It usually happens right before you hit the escalators to security.
You are already stressed about your flight, juggling your carry-on and your passport, when a uniform steps in front of you. “Visitax, please.”

Enforcement has always been sporadic. However, here at The Cancun Sun, we have encountered these checks more frequently in recent weeks. We passed through Cancun International’s Terminal three times in the last month, and we were flagged down twice to show proof of payment. We also interviewed travelers at the gate and the message is clear. Enforcement is ramping up.
The law is being enforced. If you are flying home in 2026, you need to be ready.

The Visitax Reality Check
Let’s settle the debate once and for all. Whatever the “keyboard warriors” in the Facebook groups tell you, the Visitax is not a suggestion.
The official government mandate is crystal clear: “This tax is mandatory and must be paid by all foreign tourists.”
There is no gray area. If you are a foreign tourist (yes, even if you stayed in Tulum or Playa del Carmen), you owe the state 283 MXN (approx. $15 USD). This is a state law designed to fund the infrastructure that keeps the Mexican Caribbean running.

The “Check Point” Strategy
Authorities are not checking everyone—that would grind the airport to a halt. Instead, they are using a “Check Point” strategy.
Inspectors are stationed at the critical bottlenecks before security checkpoints. They ar randomyl selecting travelers but preventing lines from forming. If you get stopped and you haven’t paid, you are immediately pulled out of the flow of traffic.

The Consequence: You aren’t going to jail, but you are going to enter a world of unnecessary stress. You will be forced to:
- Step out of line
- Navigate a government website on your phone.
- Panic-type your passport details while your boarding time ticks closer.
- Pay on the spot

Real Stories From The Terminal
The difference between a “Pro” traveler and a rookie is preparation. We spoke to Karol Read, a tourist from Louisville, Kentucky, who we met moments after she breezed through a checkpoint in Terminal 3.
“I saw them stopping people, but I had my QR code ready,” Read told us. “I just flashed him the code on my phone, he nodded, and I kept walking. I’m not sure why so many people think it’s a big deal… I’m not risking any part of my vacation over fifteen dollars.”

The “Pro” Protocol: How To Breeze Through
Do not be the person arguing with an agent over the price of a cocktail. Follow this protocol to ensure your departure is frictionless.
Visitax Departure Protocol
There are dozens of scam sites charging $40+. You must only use the government link ending in .gob.mx.
Do not fill out 4 separate forms. You can add up to 5 people on a single transaction to save time.
Airport Wi-Fi fails. Emails don’t load. The moment you pay, take a screenshot and save it to “Favorites”.
If flagged at security, have the phone brightness UP. Flash the code. Keep walking.
You have mastered the departure protocol. Have a safe flight.
1. The “24-Hour” Rule Do not wait until you are in the taxi. Go to the official visitax.gob.mx website 24 hours before your flight. The site works best on a stable hotel Wi-Fi connection, not on LTE data in a moving van.
2. The “Favorites” Hack This is critical. Do not rely on an email. When the receipt pops up on your screen, take a screenshot immediately.

- Open your photos app.
- “Favorite” that screenshot so it is the first thing you see.
- When you approach security, have your phone screen on and the brightness up.
3. Group Velocity If you are traveling with a family of four, you can pay for everyone in a single transaction. Keep that “Master QR Code” on the phone of the most organized person in your group. When the officer approaches, hold up the phone and say, “Four people, one code.” It works every time.
The Bottom Line Cancun is an effortless paradise, provided you follow the rules. Pay the 283 MXN. Get the screenshot. Go home happy with a new tan.
