Summer is here, and millions of Americans are packing their bags for the sunny shores of the Mexican Caribbean. Cancun remains one of the absolute top vacation choices in the entire world. It features gorgeous white sand beaches, stunning all-inclusive resorts, and crystal-clear waters that you simply cannot find anywhere else. But before booking a flight and finalizing your itinerary, the exact same question always comes up: Is it actually safe to visit right now?

You can read the news and see endless warnings online. It is incredibly easy to get spooked by the loud headlines and viral videos. However, the reality on the ground often tells a completely different story. To get the actual truth, we looked past the dramatic news segments. We went straight to the source. We looked at the data from the people who are actually walking the streets, sitting on the beaches, and staying in the resorts right now.
Here is exactly what everyday travelers are saying about safety in Cancun this summer.

The Real Traveler Safety Score
Our proprietary Traveler Safety Index measures the real-time sentiment of visitors who have recently traveled to the area. For Cancun, the data paints a very clear and positive picture. Out of 1,811 verified traveler votes, Cancun holds an outstanding safety score of 92 out of 100.
The overwhelming majority of tourists feel entirely secure during their stay. They are enjoying the beaches, dining out at night, and exploring the resort zones without looking over their shoulders. This incredibly high score proves that the day-to-day experience for the average vacationer is relaxed and peaceful. For a massive, bustling tourist hub, landing a 92 is an incredibly strong indicator that the destination is operating smoothly and safely for families and solo travelers alike.
The Unsafe Votes: What Are The Real Risks?
Of course, nowhere is perfectly flawless. With over 1,800 votes, there is a small percentage of people who reported feeling unsafe. But when you look closely at the data, the concerns are not about extreme danger. They are about common tourist annoyances.
Out of the negative reports, the majority come down to two specific issues. First, there were 36 reports of general scams. Second, there were 22 reports of travelers being overcharged by local taxis.
That is the reality of the risk. Visitors are not facing high-level threats in the hotel zones. They are dealing with opportunistic drivers trying to make an extra buck off a tourist. If you book your airport transfers in advance and stick to trusted transportation, you completely avoid the biggest complaint travelers currently have.

The U.S. State Department Stance
It is always smart to check official government warnings before traveling. The U.S. State Department currently places Quintana Roo, the state home to Cancun, at a Level 2 travel advisory. The official designation is to “exercise increased caution“.
While that might sound intimidating at first glance, you need to understand the context. A Level 2 advisory is the exact same rating the U.S. government gives to major European destinations. If you travel to London or Paris this summer, you are traveling to a Level 2 destination under the exact same warning level.
The advisory notes there is a risk of violence from criminal organizations and gangs. However, tourism is operating normally and trips are continuing exactly as planned. If you stay in well-lit pedestrian areas, remain in the resort districts, and pay attention to your surroundings after dark, your trip should be completely uneventful.

Playa Del Carmen: Nightlife And Safety
Cancun is not the only popular spot in the region. Just an hour south, Playa Del Carmen offers a slightly different vibe. According to the traveler index, Playa Del Carmen holds a very strong safety score of 91, based on 517 traveler votes.
Because this town is known for a much more active, walkable nightlife scene, the risks change slightly. The most common concerns reported by travelers in Playa Del Carmen revolve around being out late at night. Visitors specifically mentioned worries about drink spiking and late-night fights near the bars. If you are heading out to enjoy Fifth Avenue, simply watch your drink, stick with your group, and head back to your hotel before the late-night crowds get too rowdy.
Tulum: Why The Score Drops
Further down the coast, the aesthetic and the safety scores change. Tulum currently holds a lower safety score of 77, based on 264 votes.
Tulum has grown massively in a very short time, and the infrastructure is still catching up. The reports from travelers here mention a wider variety of issues. Visitors cited street scams, isolated assaults, and aggressive transportation and taxi scams. Because Tulum is more spread out and requires more driving between the beach, the town, and the jungle resorts, travelers are more exposed to transportation hassles. If you plan to visit Tulum, you need to be far more vigilant about how you get around and who you trust for rides.

The Bottom Line For Your Summer Trip
Overall, the Mexican Caribbean remains a premier summer destination for a reason. The data clearly shows that Cancun is highly rated by the people who are actually there right now. The overwhelming majority of visitors are enjoying pristine beaches and relaxing resort amenities without a single issue.
Mexican Caribbean Safety
If you use basic street smarts, avoid buying things off the street, and pre-book your transportation, you will likely have a fantastic, stress-free vacation. Do not let the dramatic headlines scare you away from a well-deserved getaway. The thousands of travelers voting on the safety index prove that paradise is still very much open, incredibly welcoming, and safe to enjoy.
