I’ve Visited Over 30 Cancun Resorts: Here Are The 3 I Keep Returning To Year After Year

Share The Article

After years of covering the Mexican Caribbean, I have checked into more than 30 different resorts in Cancun. I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the overpriced.

The truth is, while there are hundreds of hotels in the Hotel Zone, most of them blur together. But there are three properties that I actually spend my own money on and keep returning to year after year.

I've Visited Over 30 Cancun Resorts Here Are The 3 I Keep Returning To Year After Year

Whether you need space to explore, an adults-only escape, or a high-energy luxury vibe in Costa Mujeres, here are the three resorts that never let me down.

1. The “Base Camp”: The Westin Lagunamar Ocean Resort

Best For: Travelers who need space, convenience and want to leave their resort.

When I have a week full of tours booked—or if I just want the freedom to explore Cancun without feeling guilty about missing a prepaid buffet lunch—this is my go-to. The Westin Lagunamar is not all-inclusive, and that is its superpower. It forces you to get out and see the real Cancun.

Why I Keep Going Back:

  • The “Carry-On” Hack: Every single suite comes with a washer and dryer. This sounds boring until you realize you can pack for a 7-day trip in a carry-on, wash your clothes mid-week, and skip the baggage claim chaos entirely.
  • Massive Footprint: The rooms are huge (apartment style with kitchenettes), and the pools are gigantic. You never feel cramped here.
  • The Location: It sits on one of the widest, most beautiful stretches of sand in the Hotel Zone. Plus, it is directly across the street from La Isla Shopping Village. You have dozens of restaurants, shops, and entertainment options literally 50 steps from your lobby.

The Room To Book: Get the One-Bedroom Suite. The price point is often fantastic for the square footage you get. It feels less like a hotel room and more like a luxury condo on the beach.

2. The “All-Time Favorite”: Hyatt Zilara Cancun

Best For: Classic, high-end, Adults-Only luxury.

I think we are all counting down the days until the full renovation of this property is complete and the grand opening is announced, but even now, the Hyatt Zilara remains my all-time favorite hotel in Cancun. This place strikes a balance that 90% of resorts miss. It has good vibes and energy, but it isn’t “crazy.” It feels luxurious, but not stuffy.

Why I Keep Going Back:

  • The Food: The a la carte dining here is next level. It’s consistent, high-quality, and doesn’t feel like mass-produced banquet food.
  • The Beach: Because of where it sits in the Hotel Zone, the beach is wide, the sand is powder-white, and the swimming conditions are usually perfect.
  • The Vibe: It is strictly Adults-Only (18+), but it’s not a library. They host “chic” pool parties that keep the energy fun but lux. You can have fun at the pool without being splashed by kids or annoyed by spring breakers.

The Room To Book: Splurge on the Ocean Front Swim-Up Suite. Unlike some “swim-up” rooms that just face a murky canal, these are the real deal. You have views of the main pool (which connects to your terrace), but you also have a semi-private pool area just a short staircase down. You can literally step from your room into the water. It is the ultimate luxury setup.

3. The “Costa Mujeres Escape”: TRS Coral Hotel

Best For: High-energy luxury, nightlife, and escaping the Hotel Zone traffic.

TRS Coral Hotel Cancun

While the Excellence hotels often steal the spotlight in the northern Costa Mujeres region, my personal favorite is the TRS Coral. Located about 20 minutes north of the Hotel Zone, this property feels like a different world. It is modern, sleek, and brings a level of entertainment that most resorts can’t match.

Why I Keep Going Back:

  • The Entertainment: This isn’t just a “poolside bingo” resort. They have high-end shows, boat rides on the man-made canals, and the famous CHIC Cabaret & Restaurant on-site (a dinner-show experience that rivals Vegas).
  • The Energy: The pools are energetic with DJs and music, but it manages to avoid the trashy “Spring Break” atmosphere. It feels like a high-end beach club.
  • All-Butler Service: Every suite comes with butler service. It’s a nice touch that adds a layer of ease to the trip—need a reservation? Just text your butler.

The Room To Book: Go for the Swim-Up Suite. The architecture of TRS Coral is modern and stunning, and the swim-up suites connect you to the resort’s massive canal/pool system. It’s the perfect spot to cool off with a drink before heading out for a night at the cabaret.
