Major Hyatt Resort in Playa del Carmen to Go Adults-Only, Leaving Guests Scrambling Over Brand Change

Imagine you’ve spent months planning the perfect family vacation to Playa del Carmen. You booked a beautiful, family-friendly beachfront resort with a trusted name, perfect for you and the kids. Your flights are paid for, the vacation time is approved, and you’re all counting down the days. Then, the news drops: the hotel is changing hands and will be relaunching as a strictly adults-only property, putting your family’s reservation in jeopardy just weeks before you’re set to travel.

For many travelers, this isn’t a hypothetical situation. It’s the chaotic reality they are now facing as a major Playa del Carmen hotel transition creates a wave of frustration for families caught in the middle.

What’s Happening at the Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen?

The Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen, a long-time favorite for its prime location and family-friendly atmosphere, will officially leave the World of Hyatt program at 11:59 p.m. on July 31, 2025.

Immediately following its departure, the 314-room property will reopen under a new, still-unnamed brand and, most importantly, will be rebranded as an adults-only, all-inclusive resort. This means that after July 31st, World of Hyatt members can no longer earn or redeem points, and elite benefits like room upgrades and late check-out will no longer apply.

Why This is Causing Chaos for Travelers

While a hotel changing its brand isn’t uncommon, the bigger issue here is how existing bookings are being handled—a process that is proving to be a nightmare for many guests.

Hyatt’s official statement notes that paid cash reservations are expected to be honored. However, travelers with bookings made using points, and especially any reservation that includes children for dates after the changeover, are reporting that their plans are not being honored.

This has left families and loyal Hyatt members in a difficult position, having already invested significant money in non-refundable flights and planned events like destination weddings around their hotel booking.

The lack of clear, proactive solutions from the hotel has created a major headache, forcing many to scramble for last-minute, often more expensive, alternatives during the peak summer season.

What To Do If You’re Affected

If you have a booking at the Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen for after July 31, it’s crucial to take action now. While we hope all guests can find a fair resolution, several nearby Hyatt resorts are available for those who need to find an alternative.

  • For Families: The Hyatt Ziva Cancún is a fantastic family-friendly, all-inclusive option about an hour north. It’s famous for its kids’ water park and excellent nightly entertainment, making it a strong replacement.
  • For Adults: If you are traveling without children, the Hyatt Zilara Riviera Maya is an adults-only, all-inclusive that offers a more serene, upscale experience. The Hyatt Vivid Playa Del Carmen, also an adults-only all-inclusive, is another excellent choice located right in the heart of town.

While this transition is undoubtedly causing short-term pain for many loyal guests, the silver lining is a brand-new, adults-only option coming to the Playa del Carmen hotel scene. For now, the key takeaway is to double-check your reservations and be proactive in finding a solution.
