New Testing Site Installed At Cozumel Ferry Port

A new COVID-19 test lab has been installed at the Cozumel ferry dock. The Cozumel ferry is the prime gateway connecting Cozumel to the mainland in Yucatan Peninsula. Thousands of tourists and locals from Playa del Carmen, Cancun, Maya Riveria, and sites along the Quintana Roo coast use the ferry to cross the waters each day.

The portable testing site launched on February 18 provides both antigen and rapid testing for travelers. The announcement was made by the general director of the Comprehensive Port Administration of Quintana Roo (APIQROO).

Alicia Ricalde Magaña, the head of APIQROO said the Marko Teck Laboratory module will detect allow travelers to obtain results prior to boarding the ferry. She noted that international travelers may use the facility to obtain test results before heading back to their country of origin.

Test Results

This new test site is a timely option for travelers as results are ready in 20 minutes for antigen tests and within two hours for PCR tests. 

The results are delivered via e-mail attached with a QR code for ease of access. 

The 45-minute ferry trip transports passengers daily from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel, with services available each hour.

The ferry terminal is situated in downtown Cozumel, at the extension of Av. Benito Juarez, parallel to the Palmeras Restaurant.

The ferry harbor is located in close proximity to the Cozumel Hotel. Those in the city center of San Miguel are within walking distance of the terminal. Out-of-towners would have to drive to access the pier and have the option of taking a taxi which is readily available all over Cozumel. 

Cruise passengers from International Pier or Puerta Maya can also take a taxi which would take less than ten minutes and cost around USD6. Cruise passengers arriving at Punta Lamgosta can reach the ferry dock on foot within five minutes. 

Car parking is also available on the main street or the parking garages located in close proximity to the pier.

The ferry terminal in Playa del Carmen is located downtown near Plaza Playacar and the main square. 

Travelers from Cancun Airport wishing to get to Cozumel normally use pre-reserved airport transfers, bringing them to the pier in 45 minutes where they can access the ferry. Once in Cozumel, taxis are ready at the pier to take tourists to their hotel or accommodation. 

Travelers from Cancun also have the option of taking a bus route which brings them to Playa del Carmen where they can access the pier. 

Calica cruise ship passengers can take a taxi which takes about ten minutes and costs under USD10. 

Car parking options are available near the Playa del Carmen ferry terminal with parking lots and garages located within walking distance.

@Dennis, Hi Dennis, there is no mention of hard copy results, making it unclear whether that option is available at this time. The lab just mentioned that due to privacy reasons, the results will be delivered via email. I will deliver you an update once there is a definite answer.
