Whenever I have a trip booked to Cancun, I almost always make the exact same mistake this time of year. A few days before flying south from Miami, I open my domestic weather app, and my stomach instantly drops. The forecast inevitably shows non-stop rain, dark clouds, and lightning bolts for seven straight days.

If you are an American heading south for a Cancun getaway in the next few months, seeing that forecast can induce sheer panic. But take a deep breath. Any seasoned traveler knows that your weather app is usually lying to you.

However, we are officially entering peak storm season in the Riviera Maya. If you are packing your U.S. passport and heading south between now and the end of October, here are the five exact things you need to know to navigate the weather and save your vacation.

1. Yes, Your Weather App Is Probably Lying To You

When you check your phone and see a lightning bolt icon on every single day of your itinerary, it does not mean your trip is a washout.
