Planning On Not Leaving Your Cancun Resort? 5 Things You Don’t Want To Forget

Share The Article

So, you have decided to pull the trigger on the “Resort-Only” vacation. You aren’t going to Chichen Itza. You aren’t going to Xcaret. Your only itinerary is moving from the bed to the buffet to the pool chair.

It is a solid plan. But there is one major flaw in the strategy: The Resort Gift Shop.

When you never leave the property, you become a “captive audience.” The hotel knows you are too relaxed (or lazy) to take a $20 taxi to Walmart, so they price their essentials accordingly. We are talking about 300% to 500% markups on basic items.

Planning On Not Leaving Your Cancun Resort 5 Things You Don't Want To Forget

It isn’t that these items aren’t available—they are. But buying them on-site is going to hurt your wallet. Here are the 5 things you need to pack so you don’t end up paying a “lazy tax” during your trip.

1. Sunscreen & Mosquito Repellent (The $35 Mistake)

This is the classic rookie error. You think one bottle is enough. It isn’t. The Caribbean sun is stronger than you realize, and you will go through sunscreen twice as fast as you do at home.

Mosquito repellent

The Reality: If you run out, that bottle of Banana Boat at the resort convenience store isn’t $15. It is $30 to $45 USD.

The Fix: Pack two bottles per person. Also, bring mosquito repellent (biodegradable is best). The resorts fog for bugs, but at dusk, the mosquitoes in the Riviera Maya are relentless. Paying $25 for a tiny can of Off! feels like a robbery.

2. A “Mini” Pharmacy (First Aid Kit)

You don’t need a full trauma kit, but you do need the basics. If you get a headache, a bug bite, or a minor sunburn, you do not want to navigate the resort’s medical system or pay gift shop prices for a single pill.

What to pack:

  • Hydrocortisone Cream: For the inevitable bug bite or Mexican Caribbean ‘unknown rashes’
  • Advil / Tylenol: For the morning after the swim-up bar. (A blister pack of 4 Advil tablets can cost $10 at the gift shop)
  • Imodium / Pepto-Bismol: For “Montezuma’s Revenge” (just in case).
  • Aloe Vera: For the missed sunscreen spots. the hotel store.
  • Bandages: Looking fora band-aid is a huge time waster

3. Prescription Medications (Bring Extra)

Medications kit for travel

This sounds obvious, but it is critical for “stay-on-resort” travelers. While Mexican pharmacies are excellent, getting a specific (and legal) prescription refill usually requires a doctor’s consultation, which takes time and money. If you are planning to disconnect from the world, the last thing you want is a logistical panic because you miscounted your pills. The Tip: Always pack 3-4 extra days’ worth of medication in case of flight delays.

4. Cigarettes & Cigars (The “Sin Tax”)

If you indulge in tobacco, bring your supply from home or buy it at duty-free before you leave the airport. Tobacco availability varies by resort, and prices are aggressively inflated.

  • Cigarettes: Expect to pay double or triple the street price.
  • Cigars: Resort cigar shops are notorious for high markups. A standard stick can easily run $20-$30 USD.

The Reality: If you run out, you will pay the price because they know you aren’t walking to 7-Eleven.

5. The “OXXO Strategy” (Snacks & Energy Drinks)

This is the ultimate pro tip. Yes, your resort is “All-Inclusive.” But that usually means their brands. If you are addicted to a specific energy drink (Monster, Red Bull) or a specific chip brand (Doritos, Cheetos), they might not be included in your package. You will often find only coffee, Coke, Sprite and maybe a bag of plain Lays in your mini-fridge.

The Fix: Do not buy snacks at the Cancun Airport arrivals hall (where a bag of chips is $12). Instead, tell your private driver: “Por favor, una parada en OXXO” (Please, a stop at OXXO). Many private transfers allow one 10-minute stop but be sure to call ahead or reserve the ‘extra stop’ when booking.

  • Grab: Your preferred energy drinks, specific snacks, and maybe a bottle of wine if you are particular about your grapes.
  • The Cost: You will pay local Mexican prices (dirt cheap) instead of resort prices.

💊 First Aid (Advil/Hydro)
🩺 Prescription Meds (+Extra)
🚬 Vices (Cigs/Cigars)

The Verdict

The goal of a resort-only vacation is zero stress. Nothing kills the “zen” faster than handing over your credit card for a $35 bottle of sunscreen you could have bought for $8 at Target. Pack smart, skip the gift shop, and save that money for the spa.
