Last Updated

Winter high season is in full swing in the Mexican Caribbean, with more tourists visiting the region than ever before this year.

The popularity of the destination shows no sign of stopping, with some areas close to reaching full hotel capacity and even selling out before the winter is over.

One such area is Playa del Carmen, which is seeing a 95% increase in occupancy, as big-scale resorts and even smaller boutique hotels are selling more than ever before; a testament to the destination’s commitment to making it a must-see place!

Americans lead as the number one visitors to Playa del Carmen, and it comes as no surprise; the destination is perfect for families young and old, with many options and attractions for everyone to have the best vacation ever.

Hotels in Cancun, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres are also expecting to see most hotels filled by January, which is not only great news for the economy but for local jobs as well, filling 500 vacancies just last month in preparation.

Playa del Carmen is also situated near other popular tourist spots like Cancun and Tulum, meaning all the fun and hidden gems that surround them are easily reachable.

Another reason why this coastal resort town is continuing to grow in popularity is how many accommodation options are situated on and around the beach for tourists to book.

Fun, Fun, Fun In Playa Del Carmen

The main reason why anyone travels here is that the good times are endless, with fun to be had around every corner.

The Riviera Maya itself is known for its stunning natural beauty, home to a plethora of cenotes, (naturally formed sinkholes filled with water) that are the perfect place to visit and swim in; there are more than 2, 500 in the region.

Surrounded by the Mayan jungle, there are incredible opportunities to explore the landscape via ATV tours and even ziplines, as well as dedicated adventure parks to immerse yourself in the very heart of the jungle mangroves.

If you are a fan of visiting historical sites, Playa del Carmen is the perfect place to set as your base, with popular archeological zones not too far away, such as Muyil, Cobá, and Tulum.

Each paints a fascinating picture of ancient Mayan life, which existed over 1,500 years ago and was a seminal part of both the region’s and the world’s history.

Perfect for those who just want to pick a quiet spot by the ocean to lounge in the hot Mexican sun all day, Playa del Carmen has you covered, offering prime waterfront views and the calmest, peaceful ocean vibes that you’ve been dreaming of all year.

Like something out of a postcard, this destination is one you should try out; when it’s not fully booked that is!

2 corrections as I am currently living in Playa Del Carmen as an American.

- PDC is south of Cancun (not North) - There’s actually more Canadians living here than Americans during the winter. However, there are people here from all over the world (Americans are just a small population).
