The peak of the summer season is just around the corner for a number of Mexican Caribbean hotspots, including Playa del Carmen, where officials just announced that sargassum levels are expected to remain low throughout the summer.
This is despite earlier predictions that suggested that the coastal destination could see a massive amount of sargassum seaweed washing up on its shores.
With Playa del Carmen continuing to top the charts as one of the most popular beach destinations in the Mexican Caribbean, here’s the latest on how much sargassum travelers can expect this summer.
New Sargassum Investments Expected To Keep Seaweed At Bay
Sargassum has emerged as the leading concern confronting travelers across the Mexican Caribbean this year, with earlier forecasts indicating record seaweed levels in 2023.
However, the latest long-term forecasts show that the Mexican Caribbean will likely see unusually low sargassum levels as ocean currents push seaweed patches northwards.
That’s great news for Playa del Carmen, a popular coastal destination some 70 kilometers south of Cancun. Fearing earlier predictions, officials rushed to invest in new sargassum measures, including lengthy barriers and new storage trucks.

And with those gloomy predictions failing to materialize – for the time being, at least – local officials have an optimistic outlook for the rest of the summer.
This week, the head of Playa del Carmen’s environmental agency, the Zofemat, said that beaches in the sun-soaked destination will remain clean and sargassum-free. As a result, Playa del Carmen is welcoming thousands of travelers daily, beating expectations and sending occupancy rates soaring.

Playa del Carmen has taken several important measures in preparation for the record-shattering summer season, with more cleaners and machinery to deal with sargassum. Together with a favorable sargassum forecast, Playa del Carmen is one of the best beach destinations at the moment.
And with soaring arrival figures, travelers can’t seem to get enough of this vibrant destination.
Commenting on the city’s surging popularity, Jesús Adrían Perez, head of Playa del Carmen’s environmental agency, said the following: “We haven’t seen a low season, and we’re welcoming more travelers than expected. The beaches are clean, and they can be enjoyed thanks to the excellent work of our team,” he said in a statement.
Earlier this year, the Mexican Navy deployed over 5.3 miles of sargassum barriers at sea to keep seaweed from reaching the pristine shores of popular destinations like Playa del Carmen. And while sargassum levels may rise occasionally during the summer, officials are well-prepared to deal with any unexpected surges.

These Playa del Carmen Beaches Are Trending Right Now With Travelers
There’s no shortage of spectacular white-sand beaches to enjoy in Playa del Carmen, and travelers can choose from a wide range of pristine shores to soak up the rays.
Playa del Carmen’s bustling downtown area lies adjacent to the city’s main beach, Playa del Carmen, which is a great place to relax after a leisurely stroll through the city’s lively streets.
Travelers seeking a peaceful and quiet retreat can opt for Playa Punta Esmeralda, a quaint white-sand shore some 15 minutes from the downtown area.
What the beach lacks in restaurants and bars, it makes up for with its authentic and peaceful environment, with a stunning shallow cenote complementing the long white-sand shore.
Another popular choice is Playa Coco Beach, a short walk north of Playa del Carmen. Smaller than other nearby beaches, it’s far from the crowds of the downtown area while offering the same beauty.

They say this all the time and it turns out to be lies. It is a very corrupt country and getting worse by the minute. It is also getting more expensive by the minute.
