Playa Del Carmen Tourists Can Expect To See Higher Police Presence As Safety Is Increased

Last Updated

After the resounding success of the summer vacation period, the most popular places in the Mexican Caribbean will be keen to decipher what worked well this year and what improvements need to be made to ensure that tourism continues to boom for many more to come.

Playa Del Carmen, one of the most traveled-to destinations this year by both national and international tourists, is already putting more security measures in place to combat the ongoing issues with crime in the area.

Lili Campos Miranda, the municipal president, is working closely with authorities to create contracted work and new patrols, allowing better surveillance to protect all visitors in the area while crime levels remain closely monitored.

These new patrols and a higher police presence will be felt in specific areas like beaches and shopping malls, as many tourists will have noticed this summer already, with most local authorities implementing tourist safety plans to protect their visitors in the hope that they will want to return in the future.

A main focus of the new security policies being brought into Playa Del Carmen will be reducing crimes in shops, with anti-extortion groups deterring thieves from the busy tourist shopping areas.

Lili Campos Miranda highlighted that though crimes such as extortion have been reduced, the increased surveillance will continue to enforce a level of security, giving peace of mind to business owners and travelers alike.

She stated, “ We are already making contracts to further strengthen security(…) At least in July we had no complaints of extortion. That’s good news, but that doesn’t mean that’s why we’re sitting with our arms crossed.”

With the area being neglected by the previous administration, Lili Campos Miranda is once again making it her prerogative to improve and protect the lives of not only tourists but of local families, all with a common goal in mind: to reduce crime levels and ensure the peaceful beauty of the area can be enjoyed by all.

This commitment to safety has been a hot topic this year, as U.S. authorities had previously published a new travel warning for Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum after reports of rising rates of alcohol spiking and petty crime.

These areas had once held the title of safest destinations in Mexico, and while that seems to be the case once more, local authorities are keen to quash any reason that would get in the way of their record-breaking year of tourism, which will have undoubtedly brought an outstanding boost to the economy.

So just what can you expect if you are traveling to Playa del Carmen this fall?

Well, for areas in the Riviera Maya, it will not be uncommon to see military troops and law enforcement patrolling popular beach destinations.

While this may take a moment to get used to, rest assured it will bring peace of mind to any sun worshipper looking to relax in the sugary white sands of the golden coastline.

As mentioned above, anti-extortion groups will have an increased presence in busy downtown and shopping areas to prevent petty crime from taking place.

It is advised to remain vigilant in these areas where organized crime still does take place in order to prevent yourself from being scammed or with a lost wallet/purse.

You will also be aware of an increased presence of lifeguards on popular beaches, as swimming safety has been an important focus.

Earlier in the year, the number of drownings had been on the rise. Therefore many local authorities implemented more lifeguards and watch towers to keep the number from rising exponentially.

When booking a stay in Playa del Carmen, it is advised to find accommodation in well-known areas and avoid booking any vacation rentals in neighborhoods that might be far away from the busy tourist hotspots.

Popularity in all-inclusive beach resorts has seen a huge increase this year due to the cost-effectiveness of the hotels, as well as the 24-hour security put in place to protect its guests.

It is clear that while crime levels are continuing to be monitored, Lili Campos Miranda and the local authorities are doing everything in their power to make sure that both tourists and locals can experience a Playa del Carmen that feels safe and peaceful, and somewhere they want to return to again and again.
