As Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean head into 2024 with massive expectations for the travel industry, here’s a look at why hotels are already filling up in the Riviera Maya for this spring.
Only 15% Of Rooms In Riviera Maya Empty This Spring As Demand Surges
Although most travelers headed to the Mexican Caribbean will primarily flock to Cancun and nearby resort destinations, the Riviera Maya is quickly catching up in popularity.
The Riviera Maya is made up of more than 10 destinations found south of Cancun; stretching from Puerto Morelos all the way to Punta Allen, the Riviera Maya boasts more than 80 miles of white-sand beaches and an endless assortment of attractions.

Despite the approaching low season, hotels and resorts across the Riviera Maya are gearing up for an extremely busy spring period.
New projections published by the region’s hotel association show that occupancy rates will peak at 85% this spring, indicating the region’s everlasting appeal among travelers.
The busiest time for the Rivera Maya will be during the second half of March, coinciding with the Easter holiday period during which millions of Americans travel abroad in search of warm weather and award-winning resorts.

The entire month of March will be unusually busy for the sunny region, as new nonstop routes begin operating to and from Tulum’s new international airport.
According to Cortés Mendez, a representative from the regional hotel association, occupancy rates will remain elevated until early April, when resorts will gradually quiet down until the summer.

The spokesperson also added that unlike in previous years, travelers are increasingly booking their vacations well in advance in order to lock in favorable rates.
The wide range of destinations within the Riviera Maya provides travelers with plenty of choice in terms of their preferred travel style.
While Playa del Carmen boasts an excellent family-friendly vibe thanks to its numerous water parks – including the renowned Xcaret theme parks – other destinations like Akumal and Tulum offer excellent adult-only choices, with large private beaches and exclusive amenities.

Meanwhile, Tulum is gearing up for a massive surge in arrival figures thanks to the completion of the Maya Train as well as the recently-inaugurated Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport.
Both infrastructure projects will make reaching the popular region easier than ever before, especially Tulum and other southern hotspots located to the south of Quintana Roo.
That’s especially good news for those seeking a quieter retreat, with coastal destinations like Chetumal and Bacalar boasting copious vacation rentals.

Starting in March, Delta will begin operating daily nonstop flights to Tulum from its Atlanta hub, with American set to launch its direct connection to the coastal destination during that same month from Dallas.
Spirit and United will also operate flights to Tulum, making the destination an excellent alternative to Cancun.
