Last Tuesday, on November 14th, TripAdvisor unveiled its annual Winter Travel Index, offering insights into Americans’ winter travel preferences for the upcoming season.

The report revealed interesting data, including that 58% of Americans will travel this season and a significant rise in international travel, with Mexico and the Caribbean snatching up the top 10 most popular destinations.

Additionally, the report’s surveys show that cost is the most important factor for American travelers this year, with a third of respondents expressing their readiness to adjust travel plans for economic reasons.

Despite this, a significant majority of American travelers intend to maintain a similar spending level to the previous year.

The good news is that TripAdvisor’s report also revealed the most cost-effective times to visit specific destinations.

For Cancun, one of the top destinations for American travelers this winter, the best time to travel falls on the week of December 4-10.

Beyond affordability, there are a few more reasons why choosing to travel to Cancun during these dates, particularly in early December, is a fantastic choice.

Excellent Weather

Cancun enjoys fantastic weather year-round, although the summer months can be too hot and humid for some travelers.

With temperatures soaring up to 84°F in July and August, embarking on a road trip to visit archaeological sites or even exploring the city might feel exhausting.

Moving into the subsequent months, from September to November, the weather becomes more temperate, but there’s a caveat – it’s also hurricane season.

Fortunately, December emerges as a sweet spot between the scorching summer heat and the potential threat of hurricanes.

It’s the ideal weather for relaxing on the beach or embarking on a Mexican Caribbean adventure – which leads us to the next point.

Endless Opportunities for Adventure & Exploration

An increasing number of travelers visiting Cancun are venturing beyond their resorts to explore the vast natural and cultural attractions that the Mexican Caribbean has to offer.

With the excellent weather and a multitude of exciting options just a short distance from Cancun, taking the time to explore destinations such as Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cozumel, and Bacalar is well worth the effort.

Moreover, according to TripAdvisor’s Winter Travel Index, action and adventure are among the most booked experiences for American travelers this year.

When it comes to Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean, the most booked experience for this winter is the Chichén Itzá, Cenote, and Valladolid Tour.

Chichén Itzá, one of the seven wonders of the world, promises a fascinating experience where you can step into the past, marvel at impressive architecture, and learn about the Mayans’ amazing astronomical skills.

Following this, you’ll have the chance to swim in a sacred underground cenote surrounded by breathtaking natural jungle landscapes.

The tour concludes in Valladolid, located in the neighboring state of Yucatán, where you’ll be able explore beautiful cobblestone streets and colonial buildings, browse charming arts and crafts shops, and finally, indulge in a buffet featuring local Yucatecan specialties.

The fact that this is only one of the numerous exciting tours available in Cancun and The Mexican Caribbean speaks volumes about this region’s abundant and diverse tourist attractions.

Cancun Travel Tips For December

Choosing early December for your Cancun trip ensures not only a more affordable getaway but also a more enjoyable experience, as you’ll steer clear of the high season‘s influx in mid-December in which Cancun can get pretty crowded.

That said, here are a few tips to make the most of your Cancun trip during this season:

  • Book Excursions In Advance: While it won’t be as crowded as mid-December, if you plan to take popular tours or visit attractions, it’s a good idea to book in advance to secure your spot.
  • Pack Suitable Clothing: The Mexican Caribbean waters are all warm and welcoming in December. So, don’t forget to pack your swimsuit, snorkeling gear, and any other must-haves for exploring the underwater wonders. And while it won’t get too chilly, evenings can get a bit windy and humid, especially after sunset. Tossing in a light sweater is a wise move too.
  • Stay Hydrated: Although December is not as hot as the summer months, staying hydrated is crucial. Drink plenty of water, especially if you’re taking a tour or visiting nearby destinations – there will be a lot of walking.

If you’re planning to visit this Mexican Caribbean gem this winter, now you know exactly when and why it’s the perfect time to plan your trip. Happy traveling!
