The Heat And Sun Finally Return To Cancun After Weeks Of Cool Temps

Share The Article

If you traveled to the Mexican Caribbean over the last three weeks, you might have packed a bikini but ended up wearing a hoodie.

It has been a strange start to 2026 for Cancun. While the destination is breaking passenger records, the weather hasn’t exactly been playing its part. For nearly 20 days, a relentless parade of “Frentes Fríos” (Cold Fronts) has stalled over the Yucatan Peninsula, bringing gray skies, aggressive winds, and temperatures that forced tourists out of the pools and into the lobbies.

But if you have a flight booked for this week, we have good news: The “Winter of 2026” is officially over.

The Heat And Sun Finally Return To Cancun After Weeks Of Cool Temps

The forecast for the upcoming week shows a dramatic shift back to the tropical paradise you paid for. Here is a look at the “Big Chill” we just survived and the heat wave that is finally rolling in.

The “Big Chill”: A Recap of the Last 3 Weeks

To be fair, “cold” in Cancun is relative. But for travelers escaping the frozen tundra of the U.S. and Canada, the last few weeks were undeniably disappointing.

Since late January, a stubborn high-pressure system pushed cold air from the Gulf of Mexico straight into Cancun’s hotel zone. This phenomenon, known locally as “Nortes” (North Winds), turned the usually calm turquoise waters into a choppy, red-flag no-go zone.

Cold Front In Cancun
  • The Lows: At night, temperatures dipped as low as 58°F (14°C) in parts of the Riviera Maya.
  • The “Highs”: For several days in a row, the daytime high struggled to break 72°F (22°C).
  • The Wind Chill: With gusts hitting 25 mph, the “Real Feel” on the beach was often in the low 60s°F (16°C).

Social media was filled with videos of tourists at all-inclusive resorts sitting on beach chairs wrapped in towels and windbreakers, trying to make the best of a cloudy situation. The unheated pools at many resorts became virtually unusable, leading to crowded bars and packed excursions as people looked for indoor activities.

The Forecast: The Heat Is Back

Starting yesterday, the wind direction finally shifted. The cold air mass has dissipated, and the Caribbean humidity is returning.

For the week of February 12–19, Cancun is returning to its baseline tropical glory.

  • Thursday & Friday: Expect partly cloudy skies as the front clears out, with highs reaching 81°F (27°C) and lows staying comfortably above 70°F (21°C) at night.
  • The Weekend: This is the sweet spot. Saturday and Sunday are forecasted to be bright, sunny, and hot. We are looking at highs of 84°F (29°C). The wind is expected to die down to a gentle breeze (8 mph), which means the red flags on the beaches should finally be swapped for yellow or green.
  • Next Week: The long-range forecast shows the mercury climbing even higher, potentially hitting 86°F (30°C) by mid-week

What This Means For Your Trip

If you are arriving this week, you hit the jackpot. You missed the gloom and are landing right as the “Goldilocks” weather arrives—hot enough to swim, but not the suffocating humidity of August.

1. The Ocean is Warmer Than the Air During the cold snap, the ocean temperature remained steady at around 79°F (26°C). Ironically, for the last two weeks, the water was warmer than the air. Now that the air temperature is rising back into the 80s°F, the contrast will feel perfect.

2. Pool Temperature Lag A note of caution: If your resort does not have heated pools, they might still be chilly for a few more days. It takes a lot of thermal energy to reheat thousands of gallons of water after three weeks of cool winds. Stick to the ocean or the hot tubs until the weekend.

3. Sargassum Update One silver lining of the “Nortes” (North Winds) is that they tend to push seaweed away from the shore. Currently, most beaches in the Hotel Zone are remarkably clean. With the winds shifting back to the Southeast, we might see some arrival of sargassum later in the month, but for now, the coast is clear.

Pack The Sunscreen (Again)

The UV index is climbing back up to an “Extreme” level of 11. Don’t let the breezy mornings fool you. After weeks of hiding, the sun is back, and it is angry. If you haven’t seen the sun in months, 84°F (29°C) in Cancun will burn you in less than 20 minutes.

Welcome back, sunshine. We missed you.
