You wake up early on the third day of your long-awaited Cancun vacation, throw on your swimsuit, and head down the hallway to grab some coffee and hit the breakfast buffet. As you are walking past the endless row of hotel doors, you notice something that looks a little odd. Sitting perfectly neat and tidy right outside someone’s room is a bright pink flamingo pool floatie, a half-full bottle of expensive sunscreen, and a brand-new plastic sand bucket.

Your first thought is probably that someone had a little too much tequila the night before and completely forgot to bring their beach gear inside. Or maybe they are just using the hallway as a temporary drying rack.
In reality, it is not an accident at all. You have just stumbled upon one of the absolute best, most secretive traditions in the entire all-inclusive resort world. It is the unspoken resort gift exchange.
When people reach the end of their vacation, they inevitably realize they have a bunch of stuff they bought at the local mega-store that simply will not fit back into their luggage for the flight home. Instead of throwing perfectly good beach gear into the trash, seasoned travelers leave it neatly outside their door as a free gift up for grabs to the very first person who walks by and wants it.

It is a totally brilliant way to pay it forward to your fellow travelers. But before you start grabbing every random pool noodle you see in the hallway, or dumping your leftover vacation supplies outside your own door on checkout morning, you need to understand how this secret system actually works. There are some very clear rules you need to follow if you want to participate in the great Cancun gift exchange.
What To Actually Leave Behind
If you are packing up your room and want to leave a nice surprise for a newly arriving guest, you have to make sure you are actually leaving a gift and not just forcing someone else to deal with your trash.
The absolute best items to leave behind are pool floaties that are still in great shape. If you bought a giant inflatable lounger and used it for four days without popping it, that is the holy grail of resort gifts. Sand toys are another massive win. Families who just arrived are always incredibly grateful to find a free set of buckets and shovels for their kids so they do not have to pay the massive markup at the resort gift shop.

Sunscreen is also highly appreciated, but you have to use a little common sense here. If you have a bottle that is half full or more, leave it out. Sunscreen is incredibly expensive in resort towns, and someone will gladly use the rest of your SPF 50. But if you have a bottle that is down to the very last tiny squeeze and is basically empty, do not leave it in the hallway. Just toss it in the trash can. Nobody wants your nearly empty garbage.
You also need to be respectful of the physical hallway space. If you are leaving an inflatable pool floatie outside your door, you have to completely deflate it first. Leaving a massive, fully inflated raft in a narrow hotel corridor is a huge tripping hazard, and the housekeeping staff will absolutely hate you for blocking their cleaning carts. Deflate it, fold it up neatly, and set it directly against the wall.

The Hard Rules On What Not To Leave
This is where the gift exchange can go entirely wrong if you are not careful. There are a few things that should absolutely never make it out into the hallway.
First and foremost, never leave leftover food. It does not matter if it is an unopened bag of chips or a box of cookies. Leaving food sitting on the floor in a tropical climate is a guaranteed way to create a massive pest problem for the entire floor. It attracts bugs instantly and can actually be dangerous if someone decides to eat something that has been sitting out in the heat.

The exact same strict rule applies to alcohol. Never, under any circumstance, leave an opened bottle of liquor sitting outside your door. It is incredibly dangerous because it creates an unknown risk. Nobody has any idea what might have been put into an open bottle, and it is a massive safety hazard for anyone who might pick it up with bad intentions. Even unopened alcohol is a terrible idea to leave on the floor, simply because kids running down the hallway could easily discover it and take it before an adult ever notices. If you have leftover booze, offer it directly to another adult or pour it down the sink.
Finally, do not leave soggy pool noodles. If you are leaving foam water toys behind, make sure they have been sitting in the sun, are completely bone dry, and are entirely free of any mold or weird smells.

The Art Of Claiming A Resort Gift
If you are on the receiving end and spot some great gear in the hallway, the rules for taking it are incredibly simple.
These items are completely up for grabs on a strict first-come, first-serve basis. If you see a folded floatie and a bottle of sunscreen placed neatly side-by-side right against the wall next to a room door, that is a deliberate gift. You can pick it up with total confidence and a clear conscience, knowing you just scored free beach gear.

However, you need to read the room. If you see one random, single item laying in the absolute middle of the hallway—like a solitary pair of sunglasses or a kid’s water shoe—that is not a gift. Someone clearly dropped it by accident while rushing to the elevator. Leave those items alone, or be a great person and walk them down to the lost and found desk in the main lobby.
You also need to protect yourself. Never take anything that looks like it could be a health hazard. If you see opened food, half-drank bottles of water, or anything that looks dirty or compromised, just keep walking.
Secret Resort Gifts
The Poolside Handoff Alternative
If leaving your stuff in the hallway feels a little weird to you, there is an even better way to pass on your floaties. On your very last day, when you are finally drying off and packing up your pool bag to head to the airport, just take a quick look around the pool deck.
Find a couple who just arrived or a family with kids, walk right up to them, and simply ask if they want your floatie for the rest of their trip. Nine times out of ten, their eyes will completely light up, they will aggressively thank you, and you will walk away feeling like an absolute resort legend. It is the perfect, fun little way to wrap up a great vacation and make sure someone else has an amazing time in the water.
