These 3 Mexican Caribbean Hotspots Are Among The Top Destinations For 2024 According To Tripadvisor

Last Updated

The Mexican Caribbean is one of the hottest tourism regions in the world right now and has numerous popular destinations lining the aqua-blue and white sand coast.

Three of these Mexican Caribbean hotspots – Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum – are even among the top destinations for 2024 according to Tripadvisor.

A look at what these tropical paradises have to offer will demonstrate why each destination is so popular.

Beautiful Resort in Cancun, Mexico

Cancun

Cancun was developed specifically to be a resort town and over the years it has come up with more and more to offer tourists.

Often considered more of a party destination popular for spring breakers, Cancun is so much more.

It’s filled with family-friendly resorts, beaches, and activities but still has amazing nightlife and lively beach clubs for those looking to party.

Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen sits about an hour south of Cancun and in the past has been a quieter alternative for those looking for fewer crowds than what you’ll typically find in the more popular destination.

These days, Playa del Carmen is more popular too, though, so it’s much busier than it used to be.

Still, it has a more authentic charm and its own personality that many travelers enjoy.

Despite Playa del Carmen’s slightly more relaxing and intimate atmosphere, it also has a party scene that is mostly confined to the area around the famous 5th Avenue.

Tulum

Of the three destinations that made the list of top places to travel in 2024, Tulum is the trendiest for the year with its new airport launching soon.

It isn’t quite as touristy as Cancun or Playa del Carmen, despite the fact that many American digital nomads call it home.

Tulum is the place to go if you’re interested in Mayan culture and nature, as there are endless opportunities to explore both in Tulum.

Tulum does have a nightlife scene, but overall has a more relaxed atmosphere.

@jessicaxalexis There’s so much to do in Tulum I highly recommend staying 4-5 days if you’d like to explore all that it has to offer. Three Things These Destinations Have In Common

While each of these three destinations does have its own distinctive personality, they also have some similarities.

There are three similarities specifically that make either one a good choice for a Mexican Caribbean vacation.

Those similarities include:

  1. Plenty of beautiful white sand beaches to enjoy.
  1. The presence of a wide variety of lodging options.
  1. Plenty to do in and around each destination.

The Ease Of Getting To These Destinations

One of the things that contributes to the popularity of all three of these destinations is how easy it is to get to them.

Just from the U.S. alone, travelers can fly directly to Cancun Airport, the main hub for the region, from 41 different airports.

From there it’s only an hour to Playa del Carmen and only about two hours to Tulum.

Once the Maya Train is fully operational, it will be even easier to travel from Cancun Airport to the other two destinations.

Combining All Three Destinations Into One Vacation

The close proximity of Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum makes it easy to combine all three destinations into one vacation.

Whether you rent a car, book private transportation, or hop aboard the Maya Train once it’s completed, there are plenty of options to get from one place to the other.

Visiting all three would undoubtedly be an epic vacation.

Why Anytime Is A Good Time To Visit Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Or Tulum

Some times of the year, like spring break season and winter, are busier than others in all three destinations.

That being said, there are plenty of hotels to go around and these months are a great time to visit if you want to escape the cold.

Summers are hotter but less crowded, and the warm summers are the perfect time to enjoy the beaches in the region.

In the fall, temperatures are still warm enough to enjoy everything each destination has to offer and often hotel rates are lower.

Essentially, any time is a good time to visit Cancun, Playa del Carmen, or Tulum – it just depends on the experience you’re looking for.
