When you book a vacation to the Mexican Caribbean, it is incredibly easy to spend your entire trip lounging by the infinity pool at your all inclusive resort. Cancun is globally famous for delivering absolute luxury and endless modern conveniences. But if you never leave the Hotel Zone, you are missing out on some of the absolute best parts of the region.

Mexico has an official tourism designation known as Pueblos Magicos, or Magical Towns. These specific locations are recognized for their deep cultural heritage, stunning natural beauty, and highly preserved historical charm. The home state of Cancun, Quintana Roo, currently boasts four of these highly sought after titles. In fact, the state is actively seeking to add five more destinations to the list, including Holbox, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Puerto Morelos, Mahahual, and Calderitas. If successful, Quintana Roo would increase its number of magical towns from four to an incredible nine.

It’s also worth mentioning that Valladolid is a designated Magical Town (Pueblo Mágico), near Cancun but it is located in the state of Yucatán, not Quintana Roo

Until those new designations become official, you need to focus your travel itinerary on the original four. If you want to experience the absolute best of the Mexican Caribbean, here are the four Magical Towns near Cancun that everyone should visit at least once.

1. Bacalar

Bacalar Lagoon (2)

Tucked away in the southern region of the state near the Belize border, Bacalar is an absolute paradise for nature lovers. It is famous for the Lagoon of Seven Colors. The crystal clear water is incredibly shallow and features stunning, vibrant shades of blue that genuinely look heavily edited in photos.

Unlike the massive mega resorts of Cancun, Bacalar focuses heavily on eco friendly boutique hotels and completely unplugging from the chaotic modern world. You can spend your days paddleboarding across the glass like surface, exploring the massive historic stone fort in the center of town, or taking a completely silent sailboat tour. The vibe is incredibly relaxed and heavily focused on sustainable travel, making it the perfect escape for anyone looking to truly unwind in nature.

2. Cozumel

Cozumel Beach

While most people know Cozumel exclusively as a massive cruise ship port, this beautiful island hides an entirely different world if you know exactly where to look. To truly experience the magic of Cozumel, you need to rent a jeep and drive over to the wild and undeveloped eastern coast.

Away from the port, you will find massive limestone cliffs, crashing ocean waves, and tiny roadside beach bars serving the freshest seafood in the Caribbean. Cozumel is also globally recognized as one of the premier scuba diving and snorkeling destinations on earth. The massive coral reefs surrounding the island are absolutely teeming with vibrant marine life, making it an absolute must visit spot for underwater adventurers and ocean lovers.

3. Isla Mujeres

Just a quick fifteen minute ferry ride from the bustling Cancun Hotel Zone, Isla Mujeres feels like an entirely different planet. The island is incredibly small, and the absolute best way to explore it is by renting a golf cart for the day. You can slowly cruise down the scenic coastal roads, stop at Punta Sur to see the ancient temple ruins, and grab an ice cold margarita overlooking the steep ocean cliffs.

The undisputed crown jewel of the island is Playa Norte. This stunning stretch of powder soft white sand and incredibly calm turquoise water consistently ranks as one of the best beaches in the entire world. It is the absolute perfect place to drop your towel, wade into the warm water, and watch a spectacular tropical sunset.

4. Tulum

Tulum has absolutely exploded in popularity over the last decade, transitioning from a sleepy backpacker town into a highly premium boho chic luxury destination. Despite the massive influx of tourists and upscale jungle beach clubs, and at times some controversy, the core magic of Tulum remains completely intact.

The main attraction is the breathtaking ancient Mayan ruins perched directly on a steep cliff overlooking the bright blue Caribbean Sea. It is one of the most incredibly scenic archaeological sites on the planet. Beyond the ruins, Tulum is surrounded by a massive network of underground freshwater cenotes. You can spend your entire vacation swimming through these crystal clear caves, diving into deep jungle sinkholes, and exploring the incredibly lush tropical landscape that makes this town so unique.
