As Cancun continues to become an even more popular vacation destination year after year, officials have begun to utilize the income from tourism to make improvements throughout the city.
Currently, there are multiple infrastructure projects taking place, parks being improved, and beaches being better maintained thanks to money coming in from tourism.
Now, a new project was just announced regarding the Tajamar Boardwalk of Cancun, which will be transformed into a tourist attraction.
Cancun’s Tajamar Boardwalk
The current Tajamar Boardwalk is not the kind of boardwalk you’d expect to find in a beach vacation destination.
There are no rides, arcades, restaurants, bars, or beaches along this boardwalk like you might see in places like Virginia Beach or Santa Monica.
In its current state, it is more or less a biking and walking path along the city side of the waterfront, with no amenities that would interest tourists other than the views.

This Concrete Boardwalk Does Have Something To Offer
While the boardwalk definitely cannot be called an attraction as it is right now, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have something to offer.
The location of the Tajamar Boardwalk alone, which is near the famous Nichupte Lagoon, makes it something special.
From the boardwalk, which overlooks this fascinating lagoon, the views are incredible.

The Project That Will Turn The Boardwalk Into A Tourist Attraction
According to officials, an initial investment of more than $700,000 will be put into the project, though it is not clear what the changes will be yet.
This is considered a “pre-investment“ that will be used to lay the groundwork for the project.
The project is expected to begin in 2024, although specific dates have not yet been discussed.

First Things First
According to the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism, which goes by the acronym Fonatur, “the justification behind this initiative is the integration of pre-investment studies to guide the rehabilitation and maintenance of this emblematic area.”
The organization further commented on these pre-project actions.
They stated that “These studies aim to determine the conditions and requirements necessary to transform the area into a first-class recreational tourist space.”
Why It Took So Long To Decide On This Transformation
There’s a little bit of history behind the Tajamar Boardwalk that has kept it from being the tourist attraction it could be.
The boardwalk, or Malecon Tajamar, was closed due to some legal disputes between the years 2018 to 2020.
These disputes had to do with the concerns of environmental organizations regarding any work that would involve the boardwalk and were not resolved until 2020.
Protecting Mother Nature
One aspect of the Tajamar Boardwalk project has to do with protecting the environment.
According to officials, the natural environment will be respected, a move that will surely please environmental organizations that had any concerns about the project.
It is the hope that upon the completion of the project, the new Tajamar Boardwalk will be utilized for a variety of outdoor activities.
The Future If The Tajamar Boardwalk
While the new and improved Tajamar Boardwalk is not expected to begin until next year, with no projected date for completion yet, it is a much-anticipated project among tourism officials.
It is the hope that it will help further promote tourism in Cancun and further development in the future.
Until then, there are plenty of other reasons to visit the ever-popular vacation destination of Cancun.

Too bad they don't improve the inner city with some of that money.
