With that in mind, here are the latest findings on just how safe Cancun’s resorts are in 2023.

New Civil Protection Report Reveals Improvements In Resort Safety

Even though online rentals like Airbnb have seen their popularity skyrocket over the past few years, the lion’s share of all travelers are still opting for all-inclusive resorts.

Offering travelers all the essentials for an unforgettable vacation – think food & drink, entertainment, and excellent customer service – Cancun and all-inclusives go hand in hand. But there is one critical aspect that most travelers overlook: safety.

Fortunately, a newly-released report shows that nearly all of Cancun’s all-inclusives comply with stringent health and safety regulations. In a time when safety is more important than ever, resorts are prioritizing the well-being of guests with the implementation of rigorous procedures and preventive measures.

According to the fresh statistics, government security experts have carried out a total of 232 inspections across Cancun’s hotels and resorts since September 2021. Despite the considerable number of checks, which were conducted on resorts that have more than 100 rooms, no significant irregularities were found.

The numbers speak volumes about the resources that both the government and the private sector have invested in bolstering traveler safety. While safety remains a major issue across parts of Mexico, Cancun is a world away from scenes of shocking murders and violent robberies affecting other parts of the country.

And while crimes continue to plague parts of the Mexican Caribbean, Cancun’s hotel zone is among the safest parts of the country, with a considerable amount of law enforcement acting as a deterrent against organized crime.

Past instances have shown that Cancun’s all-inclusives are well-prepared to deal with a range of safety threats, ranging from armed intruders to severe weather phenomena. Cancun’s civil protection employees are also quick to respond to fires, drownings, and flooding, which all have the potential to endanger guests.

Cancun is just wrapping up one of the busiest summer seasons on record, with many resorts nearly selling out due to unprecedented demand. Even so, the summer has been largely safe, with only a few incidents of drownings or armed violence occurring.

Authorities Make Shocking Discovery

According to a detailed report published by Quintana Roo’a civil protection agency, one notable exception stands out due to a host of safety-related irregularities.

Perhaps surprisingly, officials have uncovered significant safety shortcomings in several Xcaret theme parks. The parks, which are operated by one of the largest hospitality firms in the region, attract millions of visitors each year and are widely regarded as some of the best attractions in the Mexican Caribbean.

Yet in 6 different cases, authorities uncovered “negligence with regards to safety measures” out of the 31 inspections carried out on Xcaret theme parks since 2021. Although largely safe, several deadly incidents have occurred in the popular parks, such as the unfortunate drowning of a 13-year-old boy in 2021.

While the report sheds light on the total number of inspections, it doesn’t contain a detailed account of which safety aspects could be improved. Xcaret Parks are notable for their massive size, often containing pools or lagoons, as well as underground rivers.
