Many popular destinations in the Mexican Caribbean have been reporting hotel occupancy nearing full capacity during this record-breaking summer vacation period.
Isla Mujeres, an island destination near Cancun, is again leading with one the highest hotel occupancy rates at 81.5% according to figures from the Ministry of Tourism of Quintana Roo.
What was once an underdeveloped fishing village only a few decades ago is now a thriving island known for its luxurious accommodation, its attractive beaches and crystal clear ocean teaming with North American biodiversity; bottlenose dolphins, green sea turtles and even the majestic whale shark.
Having earned the coveted title of “Magical Town”, it is no wonder that the island is leading as one of the most popular beach destinations this year for tourists.
Atenea Gómez Ricalde, Mayor of Isla Mujeres, stated the government’s consistent promotion of the area has been a leading cause for its success, looking at hotel occupancy between August 4th to August 6th sitting in the 94% region.
Isla Mujeres has been sure to promote its tourism offerings this summer by holding such events as “La Dorada del Caribe”, the International Women’s Fishing Tournament, as part of the 173rd Anniversary of Isla Mujeres, certainly adding to the town’s ever-growing popularity.
So just what is it about this island that has caused it to become so ‘magical’?
