Many popular destinations in the Mexican Caribbean have been reporting hotel occupancy nearing full capacity during this record-breaking summer vacation period.
Isla Mujeres, an island destination near Cancun, is again leading with one the highest hotel occupancy rates at 81.5% according to figures from the Ministry of Tourism of Quintana Roo.
What was once an underdeveloped fishing village only a few decades ago is now a thriving island known for its luxurious accommodation, its attractive beaches and crystal clear ocean teaming with North American biodiversity; bottlenose dolphins, green sea turtles and even the majestic whale shark.
Having earned the coveted title of “Magical Town”, it is no wonder that the island is leading as one of the most popular beach destinations this year for tourists.
Atenea Gómez Ricalde, Mayor of Isla Mujeres, stated the government’s consistent promotion of the area has been a leading cause for its success, looking at hotel occupancy between August 4th to August 6th sitting in the 94% region.
Isla Mujeres has been sure to promote its tourism offerings this summer by holding such events as “La Dorada del Caribe”, the International Women’s Fishing Tournament, as part of the 173rd Anniversary of Isla Mujeres, certainly adding to the town’s ever-growing popularity.
So just what is it about this island that has caused it to become so ‘magical’?
Firstly, and most notably, the area prides itself as a top ecotourism destination.
With more and more tourists looking to find new ways to experience travel sustainably, Isla Mujeres is abundant in its ecotourism offerings, with its focus on sustainable fishing practices and the conservation of marine wildlife.
Boasting beautiful flora and fauna just beyond its shoreline, the island is a jewel of a hotspot for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts who are keen to observe the biodiversity of its waters, with venues like Impression Isla Mujeres working to protect marine life and preserve its natural beauty.
A must-see is the MUSA, a world-famous underwater museum that boasts art installations amongst the coral reefs, a truly unique attraction that has been capturing tourists’ imaginations ever since its opening.
If on-land is more appealing to you, the area has everything from ancient ruins to jungle tours offering tourists a glimpse into Quintana Roo’s famous mangrove forests.
Secondly, Isla Mujeres is in no short supply of luxury accommodation to choose from.
With All-Inclusive hotels skyrocketing in popularity amongst American tourists due to their convenience, some notable hotels are the Privilege Aluxes, the Mia Reef Isla Mujeres, and Hotel Belo, all located near the golden sands and turquoise waters of the island, with endless amenities and opportunities to explore everything the area has to offer.
Thirdly, the island’s security has been elevated to new heights this summer, with the local authorities making it a top priority to ensure the safety of its visitors, enlisting the police and military to maintain that all holiday-goers can enjoy their vacation without worry.
Local authorities are keen to upkeep the area’s reputation as a number one tourist destination by pledging to renovate and improve infrastructure, as well as accessibility to public spaces, making it an ever more welcoming place for travelers.
Of course, the most obvious reason for the popularity of the island is its award-winning beaches, perfect for any tourist in search of paradise.
The tranquillity of the sugary soft white sandy coastline on the northern tail end of the island contrasts with the rough, jagged shoreline of the south.
The scenic western side of the island looks upon the luscious blue waters of the ocean, with beach clubs dotted in between the various mangroves and lagoons that the island has to offer.
Playa Norte is one of the most popular beaches in the world, according to TripAdvisor, and is a perfect base for sunbathing, water toys, kayaks and snorkeling.
Other notable beaches include Playa Centro and Playa Albatros, all of them offering a less crowded, more peaceful atmosphere compared to other tourist favorite areas such as Cancun.
