This Major U.S. City Is Getting Its First Nonstop Flight To Cancun In A Decade

Cancun is gearing up for a massive winter travel season. With millions of Americans looking to escape the freezing temperatures and snow, airlines are aggressively expanding their routes to meet the booming demand for sunshine. While major coastal hubs have always enjoyed easy access to the tropics, travelers in mid-sized cities have traditionally been forced to endure frustrating, time-consuming airport layovers. However, that travel friction is finally starting to disappear.

This Major U.S. City Is Getting Its First Nonstop Flight To Cancun In A Decade

Breeze Airways recently announced a massive international expansion, bringing new direct flights to several U.S. cities. Among the new routes heading to the Cancun, one specific market stands out from the rest. For the first time in over a decade, Richmond, Virginia, is finally getting a brand new, nonstop flight directly to Cancun.

A Major Milestone For Richmond Travelers

For travelers flying out of Richmond International Airport (RIC), getting to the beaches of Mexico usually involved a stressful connection. You would have to wake up at dawn, fly to a massive East Coast hub like Atlanta or Charlotte, run through a crowded terminal, and pray your second flight was not delayed. In fact, Richmond has not had a scheduled, direct commercial flight into Mexico since 2005. The last time the city saw a direct connection to Cancun was a brief, temporary summer charter back in 2014.

This winter, Breeze Airways is officially breaking that dry spell. Starting on January 8, 2027, travelers in the Richmond area will be able to skip the connecting flights entirely and fly straight into the heart of the Riviera Maya.

The Richmond Flight Logistics

The new route from Richmond to Cancun is designed perfectly for both quick weekend getaways and traditional week-long vacations. Here are the exact details travelers need to know:

  • The Schedule: Breeze will operate the nonstop flight twice a week, flying on Mondays and Fridays. This schedule is ideal for tourists who want a long, four-day weekend in the sun or those booking a classic seven-day all-inclusive package.
  • The Flight Time: The direct flight covers roughly 1,280 miles and takes just under three hours and 45 minutes from takeoff to touchdown. You can board your flight in the morning and be sitting at a swim-up bar in Cancun by early afternoon.

  • The Aircraft: Passengers will fly on a modern Airbus A220-300, which features a comfortable 136-seat layout, including domestic first-class seating options for travelers looking to upgrade their trip.
  • The Airport Upgrades: When travelers return from Cancun, they will be the very first passengers to utilize Richmond International Airport’s newly upgraded, 7.2 million-dollar federal customs inspection facility, making the arrival process much smoother.
  • The Cost: Breeze is known for its budget-friendly pricing, and introductory one-way fares for the new Cancun route are starting as low as $149, making a spontaneous winter escape highly affordable.

More Direct Access To Cancun

While Richmond is the only previously unserved market gaining a brand-new flight path in this specific expansion, Breeze Airways is also expanding its footprint across other mid-sized cities. The airline is launching new routes to Cancun from Tampa, Florida, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Travelers flying out of Tampa will see two new weekly flights starting on December 19, 2026. Those in Pittsburgh will gain three weekly nonstop frequencies starting on January 7, 2027. While both of these cities already had some existing nonstop service to Cancun, the addition of a low-cost carrier like Breeze introduces healthy competition, which ultimately drives ticket prices down for everyday travelers.

As airlines continue to recognize the massive demand for direct beach access outside of the traditional mega-hubs, booking a tropical escape is only going to get easier. If you live in the Richmond area, it is officially time to dust off your passport, grab your sunglasses, and enjoy a frictionless flight to the Mexican Caribbean.
