The highly anticipated Tulum Maya Train station officially began operations this week, kicking off a new era of public transportation between the southern Mexican Caribbean hotspot and Cancun.
Travelers can now purchase tickets for the southern section of the Maya Train railway system online and in person, making Tulum more accessible than ever before.
The Maya Train is Tulum’s most significant infrastructure investment to date, and alongside the recently opened Felipe Carrillo International Airport, it is set to boost arrivals in this fast-growing hotspot.
With that in mind, here’s everything travelers need to know about the new Tulum Maya Train station.
Maya Train Begins Limited Operations In Tulum Despite Construction Delays
Travelers have waited for months for work on the Maya Train to conclude in Tulum, one of the fastest-growing destinations in the southern portion of the Mexican Caribbean.
Voted one of the Top Fall Destinations In 2024 by Expedia, Tulum is home to a vast array of stunning Mayan sites and a gorgeous white-sand coastline.
Despite its massive appeal, the remote city has struggled to compete with destinations like Cancun and Playa del Carmen, which are both conveniently close to Cancun International Airport.
That’s set to change this year thanks to the recent inauguration of the Tulum Maya Train station, which promises to transform travel to and from the historic city destination.
Authorities officially opened the station to the public on Friday after completing numerous testing rounds to ensure the safety of the train station. The southern section of the Maya Train has experienced several setbacks following weeks of construction delays.
Fortunately, efforts to complete the railway system on time are now paying off for Tulum travelers, who will be able to explore both the city’s vast Archelogical Site as well as the newly-opened Jaguar National Park.
These Are The Operating Hours Of Tulum’s Maya Train Station
Travelers will still have to wait some time for the Maya Train to operate at full capacity; for now, trains will run just twice a day, at 12 and 6 P.M. from Tulum, with stops in Playa del Carmen and Cancun.
Tickets for the new railway system can be purchased on the Maya Train’s official website, which remains the most convenient way to acquire tickets for the new service.
Travelers should purchase tickets as much in advance as possible to secure availability. With demand for the new service set to skyrocket in the coming weeks, some travelers purchasing tickets in person at the train station may run out of luck.
Ticket prices vary significantly depending on the travel class and type of traveler.
For international visitors, one-way tickets to Cancun start at $15 per person for economy class, reaching up to $26 per person for the premium first class.
The Maya Train promises to deliver a new way to travel and discover the Mexican Caribbean, connecting dozens of thus far remote and unexplored wonders with Cancun and other mainstream hotspots.
From comfortable seating to fresh drinks & snacks, the modern railway system boasts state-of-the-art technology for a safe and efficient journey.
As a result, travelers will no longer have to splurge on costly taxi rides and hours-long bus journeys to reach their favorite Mexican Caribbean hotspots.
So far, the Maya Train has carried over a hundred thousand travelers, primarily on the route between Cancun, Chichen Itzá, and the historic city of Valladolid.
Starting this month, travel numbers on the Quintana Roo routes will start picking up.
