United To Fly Larger Aircraft To Cancun As Destination Skyrockets In Popularity

Cancun International Airport serves up to 600 passengers on a daily basis, making it one of the busiest airports in Mexico.   

United Airlines is one of the top carriers to offer flights to the destination from the United States.   

And now, United is preparing to start flying larger aircraft to Cancun as the Mexican Caribbean vacation destination skyrockets in popularity.   

Larger Aircraft = More Seats For Passengers 

The aircraft that United plans to begin using for certain U.S. to Cancun routes is the Boeing 777-200.   

It is a 364-seat airplane with three different seating classes.   

They include economy, economy plus, and Polaris, which is United’s version of business class.   

The different classes of seating consist of 234 seats, 102 seats, and 28 seats, respectively.

The 777 Difference 

The Boeing 777-200 is a wider-bodied aircraft that fits more seating than the 737-900 that has been being used for flights to Cancun by the airline.   

The difference that the wider body makes is the addition of 185 more seats overall.   

And as popular as Cancun is right now, it likely won’t be hard to fill those extra seats, especially during the winter and spring seasons.

Why United Needs Bigger Aircraft To Fly To Cancun 

Cancun has grown so much in popularity that the airport has broken multiple passenger records over the last year.   

More and more travelers are discovering the many things that Cancun has to offer as a vacation destination, and not just Cancun, but the entire Mexican Caribbean.   

Cancun Airport is the airport that serves the entire area, so by using larger aircraft, United can better serve a larger part of that market.

What This Means For Cancun Tourists 

More seats on aircraft traveling to Cancun means a better chance of finding tickets for the dates you want to travel, for sure.   

The change has resulted in a 30 percent increase in the number of seats available for dates when the three routes that will be getting larger aircraft begin.   

This will make United Airlines the leading provider of flights to Cancun from the U.S. on these larger aircraft. 

New Routes With Larger Aircraft 

There are three specific routes from the U.S. to Cancun that United will be upgrading to these larger aircraft for.  They include: 

• Chicago (ORD) to Cancun (CUN) 
• Denver (DEN) to Cancun (CUN) 
• Houston (IAH) to Cancun (CUN) 

The Houston route to Cancun will be the shortest to operate on one of these larger aircraft, and the Denver to Cancun route will be the first offered by the airline on one of these larger aircraft.

Timeframe For The New Aircraft Launch 

So far, these upgraded flights are only scheduled to be offered this winter, but according to sources, it is very likely that this could change.   

For now, each of these flights is available for the dates of October 29th – November 27th.   

In the past there have been flights offered on the 777 aircraft, but only from Chicago to Cancun from 2017-2020, and from Houston during the month of March 2020. 

Cancun Flight Connectivity 

United is one of many airlines that offer direct flights from U.S. cities to Cancun International Airport, as it is one of the most connected airports in Mexico.   

Currently, there are more than 40 cities in the U.S. with airlines offering direct flights to the popular vacation destination.   

This is one of the many reasons, along with the allure of the stunning white sand beaches, that draw millions of tourists to Cancun every year.
