Wintertime is typically a busy travel season because it coincides with long holiday breaks and because travelers who live in colder locations seek out warm destinations.
According to TripAdvisor, nearly 60 percent of Americans will travel during this upcoming winter season.
Among the top 10 destinations are Paris, New York, Playa del Carmen, Cabo San Lucas, and Cancun.
TripAdvisor says if you want to escape the cold this winter, Cancun is the number one choice.
Why Travelers Love Cancun In The Winter
Many travelers picture Cancun as a place to vacation during the summer months, because it’s a beach vacation destination, but winter is actually busier with international travelers than summer is.
The biggest reason is that the weather is amazing, and perfect for escaping the cold in cold weather locations.
The water is still warm enough for swimming, the sun isn’t too hot, and there is plenty to do.
Winter = High Season In Cancun
Because the weather is so beautiful in Cancun, it makes sense that winter is one of the destination’s busiest seasons.
Particularly, you’ll find that it’s a hotspot during the winter for American and Canadian travelers.
You can expect to see tourists on the beaches, hotels filled with guests, and visitors enjoying restaurants, tours, and activities when you visit in the winter.
Planning Ahead So You Don’t Miss Out
Because the wintertime is so busy, it’s important to plan your Cancun vacation well ahead of time so that you don’t miss out on anything.
The best flights and the highest-rated hotels will fill up first, so if you have specific dates and properties in mind you’ll want to get them booked.
The best tours and activities also book up quickly so you might want to buy tickets early.
If you get them through a third-party seller like Viator you can usually get a refund if you have to cancel later.
Flying Into Cancun International Airport
Cancun Airport is busy during the winter season too, some days operating 500 flights or more.
Direct flights are available from 43 airports in the U.S. and 21 in Canada, so just between those two countries alone the airport sees a lot of traffic.
Plan for longer wait times upon arrival and leave for the airport 3.5-4 hours before your departure time when returning home from Cancun.
Things To Do When Visiting Cancun During The Winter
You can do many of the same things during the winter time in Cancun as you can during any other season, but some activities are simply more enjoyable during the cooler weather season.
Cancun can get pretty hot during the summer months, making it difficult to enjoy sightseeing.
That’s why winter is the perfect time to do things like tour the Mayan ruins, ATV in the jungle, and visit adventure parks.
How To See Beyond Cancun
Speaking of tours and activities…
There is a lot to do outside of Cancun that is easier than ever to get to now that the Maya Train is in operation.
You can purchase tickets here to visit archeological sites like the Tulum Ruins and Chichen Itza, and charming, more authentic cities like Valladolid and Merida.
The Cancun Maya Train station is at the airport, so you can leave from there or take transportation back to the station later during your vacation to get to these places.
When To Visit Cancun To Escape The Crowds
Many people like the crowds and the energy when they’re on vacation, while others are looking for a more relaxing vacation.
If the latter sounds like you, then you might want to skip the winter and spring months.
For a more laid-back vacation, fall is the best time to visit this very popular winter destination.
