What A Day Trip On Your Own To Isla Mujeres Actually Costs In 2025

Share The Article

A day trip to Isla Mujeres is practically a rite of passage for any Cancun vacationer. The promise of a laid-back island vibe, stunning beaches, and the freedom of exploring in a golf cart is the perfect antidote to the high-energy bustle of the Hotel Zone. But amidst the dreamy photos, a practical question always comes up: what does a day trip like that actually cost?

The answer can vary wildly, from a budget-friendly backpacker’s day to a luxurious splurge. Here at The Cancun Sun, we believe in transparency. So, we did a “splurge” day trip in the first week of September 2025 to give you a real, on-the-ground cost breakdown, a report on the experience, and a crucial warning about a common scam to avoid.

What A Day Trip On Your Own To Isla Mujeres Actually Costs In 2025

The Cost Breakdown: Our 5-Hour Splurge 💰

We opted for comfort and convenience, choosing a high-end beach club experience. Our trip for two people, starting from the Cancun Hotel Zone, looked like this:

  • Round-Trip Uber to Ferry: 300 pesos (This will vary depending on your hotel’s location)
  • Ultramar Ferry for Two: 1,200 pesos (Round trip from Playa Tortugas in the Hotel Zone)
  • Full-Day Golf Cart Rental: 1,600 pesos (For a new-model, four-person cart)
  • Beach Club Lunch & Drinks: 1,600 pesos (At a club on Playa Norte with a daybed, food, drinks, and shower access)
Ferry Ride

The Grand Total: For our whirlwind 5-hour day trip, the final cost came to 4,700 pesos, which is approximately $275 USD for two people.

The Experience: What That Money Actually Buys You 🏝️

That price tag bought us an incredible, albeit quick, island adventure. The freedom of the golf cart was the highlight. We took an amazing drive out to the stunning cliffs of Punta Sur, stopping for incredible photo ops along the way without being rushed by a tour guide.

Punta Sur

We chose a pricier option for lunch on the world-famous Playa Norte because we wanted the comfort of a daybed and access to showers. The beach itself was breathtaking: powder-white sand, no sargassum, and crystal-clear, calm turquoise water perfect for swimming.

One surprising thing you won’t see mentioned in most reviews is the sheer number of small, silver fish that are constantly swimming around you in the shallows. It’s a unique experience, but if you’re squeamish about things brushing against your legs, be prepared!

Of course, this day can be done much, much cheaper. If you’re on a budget, you could easily skip the beach club, grab some delicious tacos from a street stand for a fraction of the price, and simply lay your towel down on the public stretches of sand.

The Insider Warning: The Beach Club Scam You Need to Avoid 🚩

Our experience at a popular beach club is where we ran into a frustrating and common issue that travelers need to be aware of. At most reputable beach clubs, the cost of the daybeds and chairs is covered by a “minimum consumption” fee—meaning as long as you spend a certain amount on food and drinks, the chairs are free.

However, after our meal, we were presented with a bill that included an extra 1,000-peso charge. The staff claimed the daybed rental was a separate fee from our food and drink consumption, something that was not made clear upfront. This is a classic bait-and-switch.

The Savvy Tip: Before you sit down at any beach club on Isla Mujeres, ask the host this exact question: “Is there a separate fee for the chairs, or is it 100% minimum consumption?” Get a clear answer before you order anything to avoid a nasty surprise on your bill.

The Verdict: So, Was It Worth It?

Despite the heat and the issue at the beach club, our answer is a resounding yes. The day was absolutely worth the price. Isla Mujeres is a must-do day trip from Cancun. Armed with a realistic budget and a few smart questions, you can ensure your island escape is as perfect as you imagined.

Happy travels!
