If you are trying to book a last-minute hotel in the Mexican Caribbean for March, you are probably out of luck.
Right now, a massive shift in global travel patterns is funneling millions of tourists directly onto the Yucatan Peninsula, pushing the region to near-capacity. Across the board, the Mexican Caribbean is currently operating at a staggering 89.1 percent hotel occupancy rate.
“We are seeing very positive tourism trends, with high occupancy rates. This confirms that the Mexican Caribbean maintains its international appeal and competitiveness,” stated the state Secretary of Tourism, Bernardo Cueto Riestra.
Here is what travelers headed to Cancun and the Riviera Maya need to know about the events affecting Cancun tourism and what to expect on the ground.

The Domino Effect
To understand why the resorts are packed, you have to look at what is happening around the rest of the continent.
This isn’t just about it being high season. A “perfect storm” of regional events is forcing travelers to pivot their vacation plans, and the Mexican Caribbean is absorbing the massive wave.
First, the Canadian travel market—which typically makes up a huge portion of Caribbean winter tourism—is rapidly shifting away from Cuba. Ongoing power grid failures and severe infrastructure shortages on the island have caused a massive exodus of Canadian tourists redirecting their travel dollars to the reliable luxury of the Riviera Maya.

Second, travelers are still pivoting away from Jamaica. While the U.S. State Department actually downgraded the country’s travel advisory to a Level 2 earlier this year, the island is still undertaking a massive, multi-billion dollar recovery effort following the catastrophic landfall of Hurricane Melissa late last year. With areas in the western parishes still rebuilding from the historic Category 5 storm, many families are choosing the established, fully operational tourism bubbles of Quintana Roo instead.
Finally, the late-February security events and roadblocks in Puerto Vallarta on the Pacific Coast have caused a significant domestic shift. Travelers holding tickets to western Mexico are actively rerouting their itineraries to the east coast, seeking the stability of the Cancun Hotel Zone.
When you combine all three of these massive demographic pivots, you get a destination operating at the absolute limit of its capacity.
The “Sold Out” Reality: By The Numbers
When an entire state averages almost 90 percent occupancy, it means the most desirable properties are entirely sold out. The leftover room inventory generally consists of ultra-expensive suites or less-desirable, off-beach properties.

The squeeze is highly localized, with some of the most popular micro-destinations feeling the heaviest weight of the crowds:
- Isla Mujeres: 93.5%
- Puerto Morelos: 92.1%
- Riviera Maya: 90.1%
- Cozumel: 89.9%
- Cancun: 88%
- Costa Mujeres: 87.1%
- Tulum: 85.5%
(Note: If you are looking for an escape from the crowds, the southern region of Costa Maya is currently sitting at a much more breathable 65.2 percent).

What This Means For Your Trip
If you hold a reservation for Cancun or the Riviera Maya right now, you need to adjust your logistical expectations. A 90 percent occupancy rate fundamentally changes the way a resort functions.
Zero Spontaneity: You can no longer walk up to a high-end restaurant at 7:00 p.m. and expect a table. Dining reservations, especially at á la carte resort restaurants or popular Hotel Zone spots, must be locked in days or weeks in advance.
The Pool Deck Premium: The resort pools will be loud, vibrant, and packed. If securing a a prime pool or oceanfront lounger, you must be down at the pool deck early in the morning or pay to reserve that VIP cabana.

Excursion Scarcity: Catamaran tours to Isla Mujeres (which is currently sitting at an intense 93.5% capacity) are highly congested. Booking verified, private transportation and private boat charters is the only way to insulate yourself from the massive group-tour crowds.
The Mexican Caribbean is handling the surge incredibly well, and the tourism infrastructure is built exactly for this type of volume. Expect a high-energy, vibrant atmosphere, plan your logistics heavily in advance, and enjoy the perfect weather that brought everyone here in the first place.
