Tulum is set to become one of the leading vacation destinations in the Mexican Caribbean over the coming years, thanks to massive new government investments that have prompted a resort construction boom.
The Maya Train and Tulum’s new international airport are two of the largest tourism infrastructure projects to date in the coastal destination, which is trending for its rich culture and stunning historical ruins.
With just several months to go before the official launching of the Maya Train, here’s why new resorts in Tulum are about to skyrocket.
New Tourism Projects Make Tulum More Attractive For New Resorts
Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Isla Mujeres are typically seen as the major mainstream resort hotspots in the Mexican Caribbean. But in the coming years, Tulum may very well exceed some of those destinations in popularity due to ongoing projects, including the Maya Train and a new International airport.
Major progress is currently being made on both infrastructure projects, which will make Tulum increasingly connected at the state and global level.
With new routes being announced to the city’s upcoming international airport, Tulum is gearing up for a record-breaking winter season, and resorts are expecting occupancy rates to skyrocket.
According to Javier Aranda Pedrero, the head of Quintana Roo’s tourism promotion agency, the brand-new Felipe Carillo Puerto International Airport will make Tulum a more attractive destination for leading hospitality firms.
Until now, Tulum has seen its popularity eclipsed by other better-connected destinations, especially Cancun, which is currently home to the largest international airport in the Mexican Caribbean, which handled over 30 million passengers last year – a new record.

That situation is set to change drastically with the opening of Tulum’s new international airport this year. The high-tech aerial hub is designed to handle over four million passengers per year. Several major airlines have already expressed interest in the new airport, with Aeromexico and Viva Aerobus being among the first to reveal plans to operate flights there.
Over 2700 hotel rooms are currently under construction around the new airport, including those belonging to the new Grand Fiesta Americana and Life Aqua resorts.

But with the Maya Train also nearing completion, the number of new hotels in Tulum is expected to skyrocket as demand soars to new highs. Despite the several-hour-long trip from Cancun and other busier hotspots, Tulum has already seen its popularity grow massively this year thanks to the city’s Archeological Zone.
The completion of Quintana Roo’s ambitious infrastructure undertakings will also secure Tulum’s position as a leading hub for expats and digital nomads, who have been flocking to the coastal hotspot for years already.

Tulum is home to a vibrant international community, with dozens of co-working facilities and trendy bars, restaurants, and nightclubs whose clientele is mostly North American.
As the city’s popularity climbs steadily, officials have announced several initiatives to protect travelers. Although largely safe compared to other destinations in Mexico, Tulum’s reputation has taken a hit due to occasionally high crime rates and the widespread presence of organized crime in certain areas.

New improvements in the city’s police monitoring equipment, as well as recent law enforcement deployments, mean that Tulum is set to see a major boost in safety this year. That’s all the more important as the tropical destination prepares itself for the launching of the historic Maya Train and one of the region’s largest airports.
