120 National Guard Troops Added To Cancun Airport Permanently To Keep Tourists Safe

For many U.S. travelers, seeing military-style uniforms at an airport can feel a bit intense at first glance. We aren’t used to it back home. Cancun was my first trip out of the country when I was a kid, and admittedly it caught me off guard.

But if you are landing in Cancun this year, you should view those uniforms differently: they are effectively your new “Safe Travel” welcome committee.

Authorities have confirmed the permanent deployment of over 120 National Guard personnel to the Cancun International Airport (AIC).

Passengers in Cancun Airport

While the headlines might sound serious, this is actually a massive win for the average tourist. The airport can be a chaotic place—especially the “Shark Tank” area—and having a federal presence there brings a much-needed layer of order to the arrival experience.

Here is exactly what these troops are doing and how they are making your trip safer and smoother.

Cancun Airport Works To Improve Arrival Experience For Tourists Here's What To Expect

1. Cracking Down on “Pirate” Taxis

This is the biggest benefit for U.S. tourists. The National Guard is actively running operations to check transport documentation. The last thing you want is your driver getting to your hotel only to demand a price that wasn’t the same as what got you in the car.

I always pre-book transportation to not worry about this, but the ADO bus is another great option if you are on a budget.

  • The Issue: Unauthorized or “pirate” taxis often try to hustle tourists at the curb, charging exorbitant rates or operating without insurance.
  • The Fix: The troops are enforcing federal regulations (in coordination with the Ministry of Infrastructure), ensuring that the van or taxi you get into is legitimate, licensed, and safe. They are there to stop the scams before they start.

2. Managing the Traffic Chaos

If you’ve ever tried to get dropped off at Terminal 3 during peak hours, you know the gridlock can be stressful. When you have a flight you are trying to catch, anything that goes wrong feels like it could derail your whole day.

  • The Fix: A key part of this new deployment is traffic control. The troops are managing the flow of vehicles in the arrival and departure zones, preventing congestion and making sure your transfer van can actually get to the curb to pick you up.

3. A Visible “Help Desk”

According to the National Guard, one of their primary functions isn’t just enforcement—it’s guidance. And that’s why the uniform shouldn’t freak you out, it should act as a helpful beacon.

  • The Fix: They are tasked with providing “direct guidance to passengers.” If you feel lost, harassed by a vendor, or just need to know where your terminal is, you can approach them. They are a safe, neutral point of contact amidst the noise of the airport.
  • Immediate Action: They are also there to respond immediately to complaints or reports. If you see something suspicious or feel unsafe, you don’t have to hunt for a police station; help is standing right there in the terminal.

4. High-Tech Security (The K9 Units)

You will likely see officers patrolling with dogs inside the terminals. They are there to keep you safe.

  • The Fix: These K9 units are there to ensure luggage safety. For the law-abiding tourist, this just means a cleaner, safer environment.

Why aren't these agents there when you exit the airport? My husband an American citizen, was pulled aside by a Mexican police officer and they searched his bags. Granted we flew out of O'Hare International Airport in Chicago and went through security there. They only pulled aside certain people and checked their bags. I asked the officer why they pulled my husband aside when we had already been through security. He had no answer for me. He kept telling me to move along. It seemed they were targeting only certain looking people. It was very discriminating.

Why does is shark tank allowed to continue to operate in the first place. They are just there to suck all the cash out of you. If the Mexican government actually cared they would regularate that area just like the rest of the North American continent does You only get this garbage in the Cancun airport. Beem to many airports in the Caribbean and this the only one that has this cesspool of parasites

Your opening is correct. Generally speaking tourists do not feel safer when seeing National Guard, or any other police dressed in what they would consider military or riot gear. Pick up trucks with machine guns mounted, et., et., etc.! The tourist mindset goes to, "what is it we have to be so afraid of that it requires military kinds of police"? How to stop taxi scams? Not National Guard! Local police dressed like tourists hiring them is the answer. Could go on and on.....! Nod at them? Surly you jest.

@Stephen Spiegel,I agree I live here and don't like to see them. It is a bit much and I know it scares people. I also feel sorry to see them at the beach in full gear. So hot.
