A new study reveals that residents in the coastal hotspot feel the safest out of all major cities in the Mexican Caribbean. This sentiment is now shared by a growing number of visitors, who are choosing the sunny destination for its reputable safety track record.

In 2024, travel to Cancun is set to become safer than ever amid new investments in law enforcement as well as improved regulations to protect travelers from scams and other forms of petty crime.

With travel to Cancun on the rise in 2024, here’s a look at three major reasons behind the city’s excellent safety.

More Investments In Law Enforcement

One of the major factors behind Cancun’s improved safety situation is the city’s record investments in bolstering its law enforcement personnel. 2023 saw a renewed commitment from officials to deploy more police on Cancun streets and to equip units with the latest cutting-edge equipment.

From newer vehicles and even a helicopter to more security cameras, Cancun’s law enforcement is better equipped to deal with organized crime and other threats faced by residents and visitors.

The coastal destination has also redoubled efforts to improve beach safety during the busy winter season. With beaches across Cancun in optimal condition this January, more lifeguards have been deployed to watch over travelers in the sunny hotspot.

New Taxi Regulations To Protect Travelers

Another reason behind Cancun’s improved safety situation has to do with a host of new measures aimed at tackling taxi crimes.

Cancun’s taxi drivers are among the most problematic in the Mexican Caribbean, with travelers regularly facing overcharging and other scams. In 2024, officials will continue to implement new measures to penalize law-breaking taxi drivers.

Meanwhile, the use of Uber is continuing to grow in popularity, offering travelers a cheaper and more reliable alternative to overpriced taxis. The full launching of the Maya Train in just several weeks is set to bring major relief for millions of visitors, who will soon be able to access one of the world’s newest infrastructure projects.

Another useful feature that will be implemented in 2024 is a panic button on the Uber app across the Mexican Caribbean. The new measure allows both drivers and passengers to contact authorities in case of emergency.

Regulation Of Airbnbs

Even though Cancun’s world-class all-inclusive resorts will remain the predominant accommodation type for travelers in 2024, Airbnbs and online rentals remain a popular alternative.

Offering cheaper rates and unique locations close to the beach or Cancun’s bustling downtown area, there are thousands of rental units across the sun-drenched destination.

Authorities are advancing with new efforts to create a register encompassing all online rentals in the popular destination. The new law will ensure that all online rentals meet safety and sanitary requirements, providing a safety boost for travelers opting for Airbnbs.

Officials are also increasing awareness of the high number of online scams planning the vacation rental market. As a result, travelers are urged to be cautious when booking accommodations online.

While Airbnbs are generally safe, travelers should opt for properties located in touristy areas and avoid those on the outskirts of the popular destination. Certain areas in the city lack comprehensive law enforcement
