The busy high season has officially begun in Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean as tens of thousands of travelers flock to the sun-drenched region each day.

This year, even more travelers are expected to visit the popular tropical destination thanks to the launching of the new Maya Train. And with so many travelers enjoying everything the spectacular city has to offer, officials are taking new measures to protect visitors.

Crime Rates Fall As New Safety Measures Take Effect

New efforts to boost safety in Cancun have led to a significant decrease in crime rates over the past year. New statistics reveal that crime rates are dropping across the board in Cancun thanks to new government initiatives to deter criminals and bolster safety.

According to a new report published by the city hall, crime levels have decreased by up to 28% compared to the same period last year. Armed robberies have dropped by 8.4%, with recorded homicides reduced by a similar percentage.

Although crime rates have fallen across most of Cancun’s neighborhoods, the difference is most evident in the city’s Resort Zone, home to most of Cancun’s large all-inclusives. And with new investments in public safety and state-of-the-art technologies, officials hope crime rates will continue to fall over the coming years.

That said, some areas in Cancun continue to see above-average crime rates. Downtown Cancun is generally safe during the daytime, but travelers should increase caution at night and avoid dimly lit areas.

New Law Enforcement Deployments To Tackle Organized Crime

Officials in Cancun and in the Mexican Caribbean regularly deploy hundreds of law enforcement units to protect travelers during the busy summer and winter periods.

From popular city beaches to crowded shopping centers, travelers can expect to encounter armed police officers and even troops from the Mexican Army. Although it may look unusual from a traveler’s perspective, armed law enforcement personnel constitute an important deterrent against organized crime groups.

Thanks to these efforts, Cancun is regarded as one of the safest destinations in Mexico.

With several million travelers expected to flock to Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean this winter, nearly all visitors can look forward to a safe journey.

That’s especially the case for travelers who are staying in the Resort Zone, which enjoys extremely high levels of safety. Even so, petty crime remains a persistent threat throughout the city, so travelers are advised to keep a close eye on their belongings.

The same is especially true for off-the-beaten-path locations, where law enforcement maintains a much less visible presence.

Record Investments In New Surveillance Systems

With a record-breaking high season on the way, Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean are gearing up for some of the busiest times of the year in resorts, airports, and shopping centers.

While that’s excellent news for the local economy, it also presents a unique opportunity for thieves to take advantage of travelers. But the introduction of highly advanced surveillance systems and new technologies means that criminals will have a harder time stealing from travelers.
