As travelers continue to flock to Cancun in droves, here are 4 reasons the coastal city’s beaches are considered some of the best in Mexico this year.

The Most Blue-Flag Beaches In Mexico

This year, the coastal destination is once again home to the largest number of Blue Flag-certified beaches in Mexico. Cancun’s record-breaking number of Blue Flag beaches is a testament to officials’ efforts to boost cleanliness and sustainability.

This year, Cancun travelers can enjoy 7 Blue-Flag beaches. That number officially makes Cancun the leading beach destination in Mexico when measured by the number of certified beaches. This year, the following beaches have been awarded the coveted Blue Flag distinction:

  • Del Nino
  • Las Perlas
  • Chac Mool
  • Marlín
  • Ballenas
  • Delfines
  • Coral

New Environmental Laws

New environmental policies have come into effect in the sunny destination, increasing the amount of protected beach areas and ensuring a sustainable approach for years to come.

And this year, Cancun’s beaches are more spectacular than ever as officials and environmental experts ramp up efforts to maintain the city’s coastline in impeccable condition.

With so many stunning beaches to choose from in and around the hotel zone, travelers can easily spend several days enjoying Cancun’s unparalleled choice of beachside activities.

Cancun’s boating industry is also more sustainable than in previous years, with a whopping 43 vessels receiving sustainable certification this year. Cancun Sailing, a local catamaran and private yacht rental firm, is among the many local operators that have increased efforts to promote environmentally sound practices.

Among other measures, smoking is now prohibited in Cancun’s public beaches, and police officers have ramped up measures to improve awareness and even fine travelers who break the rules.

New Protected Areas

Officials recently unveiled a landmark decision by declaring Playa Delfines, one of Cancun’s most iconic beaches, a protected natural area.

The new framework, which has already come into effect, protects the more than 290 species of flora and fauna that inhabit the popular beach while also prohibiting businesses from building on the location’s powdery sands.

As a record number of new hotels and resorts open their doors to travelers in Cancun, new rules ensure that ongoing projects won’t damage the city’s delicate ecosystem.

Minimal Sargassum Levels

Sargassum is a Cancun traveler’s worst nightmare; from its unpleasant smell to its damaging environmental effects, sargassum is a perennial issue in Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean.

Fortunately, sargassum levels have dropped significantly over the past several weeks, with experts describing this fall as one of the best times to enjoy Cancun’s stunning beaches. As the hurricane season intensifies and ocean currents push sargassum seaweed away from the Mexican Caribbean coastline, travelers can look forward to pristine beaches over the coming weeks.

As the record-breaking winter season approaches, officials will continue to intensify efforts to maintain the cleanliness of Cancun’s beaches for millions of travelers.
