New figures revealed this week show that Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean are on track to break their all-time travel record amid the ongoing travel surge to the sun-drenched region.

According to the Quintana Roo Secretariat for Tourism, travel numbers are up year-on-year, with the Maya Train and new infrastructure projects aiding growth.

Cancun is ramping up preparations for the busiest summer season in its history.

Over two million travelers are forecast to flock to its white-sand beaches and excellent accommodations.

With that in mind, here are 5 reasons why Cancun & the Mexican Caribbean are shattering travel records this year.

The Maya Train Effect

One of the main drivers of the growth in Cancun travel numbers is the state-of-the-art Maya Train railway project.

Once fully operational, the 1,500-kilometer train system will connect key hotspots across five Mexican Caribbean regions, boosting growth.

Since its limited launch earlier this year, the massive train system has already transported several hundred thousand travelers, attracting global attention and drawing in more visitors.

New International Airport In Tulum

Since its opening last December, Tulum’s much-awaited Felipe Carrillo International Airport has impressed travelers with its modern facilities, efficient services, and convenient location.

Said to be able to handle up to 5 million annual passengers, the international airport is handling up to five thousand daily visitors as more airlines begin flying to the airport.

Key U.S. carriers, including American, Spirit, and United, already operate flights to the growing aerial hub, connecting cities like New York with the southern Mexican Caribbean historical destination.

Safety Remains A Priority

Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean have made demonstrable improvements to traveler safety through a number of law enforcement operations.

Just last week, the local Cancun government kicked off the annual summer safety campaign, which sees the deployment of over 400 troops to safeguard travelers.

While petty crimes and online scams remain some of the most pressing issues affecting travelers, serious crimes targeting travelers are extremely rare, making Cancun among the safest destinations for tourists in Mexico.

The region’s strong track record in safety means that the Mexican Caribbean is generally safe for all types of travelers; from families to the LGBTQ+ community, the sun-kissed resort towns in the area are a reliable choice for visitors.

Record Number Of Top-Rated Accommodations

It’s no secret that Cancun is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading destinations for luxury travel. Despite more than 50 lavish all-inclusives already operating in the area, more properties are constantly opening their doors to travelers in the area.

This year, Costa Mujeres has skyrocketed in popularity with Cancun travelers on the back of its excellent variety of new properties. From the new Sha Wellness resort to the upscale Secrets Playa Blanca Costa Mujeres, Cancun has no shortage of stunning accommodations.

Growing Sea & Air Connectivity With The U.S.

With interest in Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean skyrocketing in 2024, airlines are keen on maximizing travel options to the popular area.

American travelers can take advantage of nearly 40 non-stop flights to Cancun International Airport alone, practically connecting every part of the U.S. to the crown jewel of the Mexican Caribbean.

Meanwhile, Tulum and Cozumel are also welcoming a growing number of connections, with the latter benefitting from seasonal winter flights.

Cozumel is also more popular than ever for cruise ship travel, with the Mexican Caribbean welcoming 70% of all cruise ship passengers in Mexico.
