Should You Fly To Cancun With Mexican Airline Volaris?

Last Updated

Mexico’s most popular airline ‘Volaris’ offers flights to Cancun from the USA and they have now announced some direct flight options from select U.S. locations. A no-frills approach is helping them keep costs at a low price point…especially if you travel light or you don’t plan on checking luggage. If you are having trouble finding a flight down to Cancun and a basic flight is all you are looking for, then Volaris might be worth checking out.

Volaris has been flying to the USA for several years now, but typically had used connections along their U.S. routes in order to get travellers to Cancun. However, a recent search on the official Volaris booking site shows a non-stop, Chicago-Cancun option. A return flight from Chicago (ORD) to Cancun during the week of Tuesday February 07th to 14th with Volaris starts at just under $400 USD with tax and fees included. The closest priced comparable flight is for United Airlines, starting at $516 USD (taxes and fees included). Both of the flights depart at around 11:00 am and have a total duration of 4.5 hours. For more information on U.S. cities with direct flights click here.

Of the 185 million travelers that have flown Volaris since the company started in 2004, most guests list competitive pricing as the reason they chose Volaris.

Volaris started flying to U.S. destinations in 2009 and has been adding new routes every year since. Although flying with Volaris to Cancun has been possible for several years, it usually meant a longer flight option because the flight would have connections along the way….but Volaris has now announced some new direct flight options to Cancun from U.S. cities, thanks to a partnership agreement with U.S. based Frontier Airlines. So if you are having trouble finding a reasonably priced flight for a Cancun vacation, Volaris might have an option for you. Travelers from Canada also have some new airline flight options.

Volaris (Spanish for “You will fly”) is Mexico’s largest and most popular airline, with a proven track record in the industry. They have cemented their flight route options all across Mexico (and to 8 other international locations) in the past 10 years, and now Volaris has been slowly expanding its operations to include more U.S. destinations. The U.S. airports that are currently travel destinations for Volaris include Chicago, Denver, Las Angelas, Miami, Dallas, Seattle, and New York. Volaris had their busiest year to date in 2022, flying an average of 600 flights per day.

Volaris does not currently participate in any of the big air miles rewards programs, although Volaris does offer a membership club that offers discounts. The membership is a paid membership program with annual fees that start at $29.00 per year…but with special deals for members announced weekly. Discounts for members average around 20% cheaper than standard fares so if you are thinking about flying with Volaris, you may also want to check out their reward program too. Volaris does “pop up sales” through its website for members only and these sales are sometimes 50% off of the listed flight price.

Volaris lists its target demographic as being both budget savvy vacation travelers and cost-conscious business travelers, and makes no excuses for the “comfortable and affordable” basic flight options. There are numerous social media posts poking fun at the bare bones flight approach and discussing seating options. Passengers typically find the planes comfortable and the amenities adequate, but with the typical discount airline strategy of having a very basic flight and allowing the customer to add on the parts that are important to them (leg room, meals, additional luggage etc.). A really basic flight is not going to work for everyone, so it is a good idea to research exactly what the airline you are planning to travel with provides for your journey, and Youtube can be a great place to do that.

Of course, no matter what airline you fly delays and canceled flights can occasionally be a reality. Making sure that you have a plan in case any issues pop up is always a good idea, and those plans should include a list of alternate airline carriers that can get you home. For more information on how to trouble shoot flight issues click here. It is not unusual for travelers facing canceled flights to not be able to wait for the carrier that they are using to shuttle them home at the airlines convenience, like the recent delays Sunwing Airlines placed on its passengers. Knowing what other flight options might be out there in case you face delays is important.
