Even though we’re only halfway through the year, it looks like 2023 is set to be another blockbuster in terms of passenger numbers for Cancun.
As one of the world’s most in-demand travel hotspots for several years now, the world’s appetite for Cancun hasn’t softened yet, with more and more travelers picking the sunny Mexican city as the place to spend their vacations over the rest of the world’s usual destinations.
Fortunately for travelers thinking of booking a trip to Cancun, a visit over the summer might not cost them quite as much as they think.
If there’s one thing better than vacationing in Cancun, it’s doing so for a price that won’t break the bank – and all signs are pointing towards that being a real possibility over the next few months of summer.
By holding off on making those reservations and booking a last-minute trip instead, travelers could potentially save hundreds of dollars or put it towards getting better flights or accommodation choices than originally planned.
Here are 3 reasons why a last-minute booking to Cancun this summer could end up saving you money:
Hotels Want To Be Filled
Nobody likes staying in a soulless, empty hotel. It’s bad for business from the hotelier’s perspective and isn’t exactly a great atmosphere for travelers. The solution?
Lower the prices to attract more travelers to make reservations – and that’s exactly the strategy that hotels in Cancun are prepared to take. According to Roberto Cintrón Gómez, the former president of the Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres Hotel Association, a lack of reservations has caused hoteliers to “reduce their rates and launch very aggressive last-minute offers,” which travelers could benefit from.

According to studies, by taking the risk of booking 15 days out from arrival, travelers can expect to save around 13% on the total price of their hotel reservation when compared to doing it four months prior to check-in.
Roberto Cintrón Gómez went on to add that some hotels have launched promotions where hotels are offering discounts of up to 50%. While waiting until the last minute might be risky, there’s certainly a lot of money to potentially be saved in doing so.
Airlines Want To Fill Seats
Much like hotels, airlines also don’t like to take off with empty seats on their aircraft, which can lead them to make drastic price reductions in order to take off at maximum capacity.
As travelers are generally aware, booking flights in advance is usually the best way to get value for money, but there’s also a window of opportunity and a few tips and tricks that travelers can follow to try and steal a bargain of a journey just days before departing.
According to Conde Nast, the best option for a last-minute flight is booking up to three weeks before you want to arrive, with prices typically rising from this time on.
Throw in the age-old trick of booking on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and there’s potentially quite a few dollars to be saved.
With more flights heading to Cancun this year than ever before, competition between airlines and more flexibility with departure airports could also play their part in bringing the overall price of your flight down to something a little more wallet-friendly.
Low Season Savings
While summer may be a season for North American-based travelers looking for a place to spend that all-important summer vacay, it’s not high season for Cancun – and that is very much to a traveler’s benefit.
Hotels and airlines alike will jump at the opportunity to rake in as many dollars as they can to sustain them through these typically lean times, which often comes in the way of discounts to entice as many travelers over as possible.
Low-season savings don’t just stop there. Restaurants, bars, and attractions are also known to advertise special promotions to get people through the doors, which could also save quite a few pesos.
While the weather may be on the hot side and the beaches under threat of a sargassum invasion, a last-minute summer trip to Cancun could still be just the ticket for travelers – especially if the price is right.
