All up and down the coast of the Mexican Caribbean, there are stunningly beautiful vacation destinations.
These places are characterized by spectacular white sand beaches and the clearest aqua-blue water you’ve ever seen.
Some of the most beautiful of these destinations are the islands dotting the sea, and one of those is the island of Cozumel.
And now, this stunning island near Cancun is officially the newest Magic Town in the Mexican Caribbean.
The Island Of Cozumel
The Island Of Cozumel sits just off the coast of Playa del Carmen. This is where the ferry departs to take tourists to this magical island.
Although the island does have its own airport, the best way to get to Cozumel is to fly into Cancun.

Getting To Cozumel
From Cancun, there are more direct flights, particularly from the U.S., which has direct flights from around 40 different cities.
Once at Cancun Airport, you can book transportation to get to the ferry port in Playa del Carmen.
You can then take the ferry to the island, and upon arrival, you’ll be immersed in a magical world of nature, culture, history, and marine life to explore.
However, Cozumel also has its own airport with direct connections to the U.S., so travelers can fly straight to this idyllic island.

Mexico’s Magic Towns
Mexico began a program in 2001 designed to highlight the towns in the country that provide a special or “magical” experience for visitors.
Within the first six years of the program, a total of 36 towns were added to the list, and now, more than a decade and a half later, there are 177 Magic Towns or Pueblo Magicos.
At the end of last year, there were only 132, meaning 45 were added just this year, and Cozumel had the honor of receiving this highly sought-after distinction.

Requirements To Be Named A Magic Town
In order to be given the distinction of being called a Magic Town there are a few requirements that must be met.
One of these requirements is that the town must have a population of 20,000 or more, and Cozumel has about 90,000.
The town must also be located within 125 miles of a major tourist destination, like Cancun or Playa del Carmen.
Finally, the town must commit to actively maintaining a program for tourism development.

Why Cozumel Was Chosen As The Newest Mexican Caribbean Magic Town
Cozumel has so much to offer that makes it magical, so it’s no surprise that it has been recognized as a Pueblo Magico.
The stunning tropical beaches are only the beginning of it.
Beyond those beaches are fascinating coral reefs, a national marine park with hundreds of marine life species, and an unforgettable island atmosphere.

Three Things That Make Cozumel Magical
Aside from the obvious natural resources that make Cozumel so magical, there are a few other things that make it the special place that it is.
Three specifically stand out as reasons to visit the magical island. They include:
- A collection of underwater statues at Cozumel Chankanaab.
- More than 30 Mayan ruins, including the historically significant San Gervasio ruins.
- Endless white sand secluded beaches.

A population of 90-100,000, not 20,000. And ruins, are they counting every stone or building?
Cruise ships are magically ruining Cozumel, but okay.
