Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador was in Cancun this weekend to officially inaugurate the completion of the brand new $7.2 billion peso ($421 million) Cancun Cloverleaf airport road collector project.
It’s a high-profile road work project that will help speed tourists along to the Cancun International Airport.
The New Airport Collector
A project of the Comprehensive Program for the Development of Strategic Projects of the Federal Government, the new airport collector was a much-needed project to streamline the tourist traffic flows to the airport.
The project is finally complete with only some needed cosmetic touch-ups before the roadway is open for tourist traffic.
Those who have seen the evolution of the project have noted the modernity, infrastructure improvement, and creative innovation that went into the new roadway collector.
The project was designed with the intent to increase the overall capacity of the roadway and optimize the service level for important visitor traffic to Cancun.
A new structure was built at the very slab base of the project, and three external branches were designed to speed Cancun travelers to the airport.
Additionally, important construction work was done on Mexico Federal Highway 307 Agrarian Reform – Puerto Juarez roadway intersection with Huayacán Avenue.
Other Projects Completed for Tourism
The airport collector roadway is just one of many projects that ultimately will improve transportation for Cancun tourists.

The Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard 13-kilometer project will upgrade the access and traffic flow of this important tourist transportation corridor in Cancun.
It added a number of safety features to the road, including pedestrian bridges, traffic collectors, and smoothers, along with a number of new traffic lights.
In total, more than 29 kilometers of roadways were included in part of this project, enhancing tourist convenience and access in Cancun.
Resolving Traffic Issues
The completion of the entire Cancun Cloverleaf project will be an important step forward toward resolving the traffic issues, which are a constant source of tourist complaints.
This issue has led to many tourists booking hotel rooms close to the Cancun International Airport on the last evening of their vacation getaway to avoid the hassles of trying to get to the airport on time.
As one of the three busiest airports in the entire country, an infrastructure solution was needed that could support the current levels of tourism in Cancun, along with some planning for future increases in passenger traffic.
Unfortunately, during the construction phase, the Cancun Cloverleaf project was actually a source of traffic for many visitors to the beach resort destination.
Now that is complete, it should be a source of relief and convenience for travelers speeding to and from Cancun International Airport.
What it Means for Travelers
Traveler experience is critical to the success of any international destination—especially the first impressions visitors have with infrastructure, such as the area roadways.
The completion of the Cancun Cloverleaf project should immediately provide guests to Cancun with a sense of modernity and innovation, which should enhance the first impressions of the area.
The reduction of traffic to and from Cancun International Airport should also help to reduce stress levels many travelers have experienced lately rushing to try to catch a flight.
The direct access to the brand new Maya Train will also provide visitors with new convenient transportation options that will not only further lower roadway traffic levels but also provide tourists with new access to additional destinations in the area.
Overall, the project should be a real benefit and contributor to the entire experience visitors have when visiting the beach resort destination.
