Fall is shaping up to be quite a busy period for travelers to Cancun.
That’s according to a recent report issued by the global travel portal Tripadvisor, which ranked Cancun, Mexico as the Number 1 most popular international beach destination for Americans this Fall.
Overall, Cancun ranked No. 2 of all cities in the world, sandwiched between perennial travel hotspots Paris, France and Rome, Italy.
Cabo San Lucas came in at No. 6 on the survey of most popular international destinations for Americans this Fall followed by Cancun’s neighbor Playa del Carmen at No. 7.
Mexico had the most destinations in the top ten, with three of the main beach resort destinations cited as popular spots for Americans this Fall.
Cancun Has in-Demand Amenities
It’s not surprising that Cancun ranks so high on the list when you dive a little deeper into the amenities preferred by international visitors on their vacations this Fall.
According to the survey, most travelers (67%) surveyed will prioritize food on their trip.
Cancun has been evolving into a destination for foodies with a unique mix of traditional Mexican and native Mayan cuisines fused into an adventure for the travel taste buds.
Meanwhile, younger visitors also cited amenities such as food, nightlife, and shopping as important factors in their selection of a vacation getaway destination.

Again, Cancun really excels in these amenities with world-class nightlife amenities and dance clubs along with fantastic shopping, which is a mix of local brands and upscale worldwide offerings.
Another factor the survey uncovered was travelers mainly get around by walking or public transport once they get to the destination.
The tourist zone of Cancun is a popular walking destination, and the soon-to-be-operating Mayan Train will provide more public transportation options for travelers to explore the entire region.
However, the survey did note that personal car rental and ride-share transportation options were more popular with United States-based travelers.
Nature and History in Demand in Cancun
When it came to tour-style experiences, the experiences most booked on Tripadvisor by Cancun visitors were Chichen Itza and all-inclusive tours connected to cenotes and the nearby town of Valladolid.
For travelers heading to Playa del Carmen, the focus was the ruins in Tulum, seeing the turtles in Akumal along with cenote tours.
Again, Cancun and Riviera Maya excel in these very popular nature and history tour offerings which explains why the two beach resort destinations ranked so high on the Tripadvisor survey.
Most American international travelers make their adventure plans one to six months in advance of their travel.
Younger travelers (Gen Z and Millennials) are twice as likely to book or plan to book a reservation in advance compared to the other age groups.
Fall Travel Planning Tips
Cancun and Playa del Carmen are going to maintain their popularity this Fall, leading to strong demand for resort hotel rooms and flights, especially during the very busy holiday season.
Travelers planning to visit the area during these periods should book as soon as possible, especially since the survey results indicate a majority of travelers have already booked their reservation or will be very soon (one to six months out).
An important survey result to note is that the most important trip factor among travelers is cost and affordability.
Therefore, the lower-end or budget hotel options may be the first to sell out at peak times, leaving last-minute trip planners only with higher-end expensive resort properties.
If you are a budget-oriented traveler, lock in your preferred location and price in Cancun and Playa del Carmen as quickly as possible.
For the best airfares, time is of the essence for budget-oriented travelers to the area. Book as soon as possible before fares go up based on the increased demand.
