The brakes don’t seem to be stopping the Mexican Caribbean’s staggering achievements within the tourism sector this year, as it remains to be a solid choice for travelers looking for the perfect vacation.
With the challenge now maintaining popularity in the area after the end of the summer season, Javier Aranda Pedrero, director of the Tourism Promotion Council of Quintana Roo (CPTQ), has looked forward with the focus of increasing the connectivity of tourists flocking to the destination.
This summer saw the arrival of 3.9 million tourists, indicating the substantial success of Quintana Roo’s tourism promotion, which led to hotel occupancy levels sitting on average at 80%.
Now that the low season is in full effect and local authorities have time to reflect on their successes, they are already preparing for a huge tourism spike during the winter season, considered another high season for the Mexican Caribbean.
Javier Aranda Pedrero has indicated that the collaboration between the hotel sector and authorities expanding service infrastructure is imperative for the area to continue operation as a confident and leading destination for all visitors.
So what does this mean for you exactly, and why is the Mexican Caribbean expecting a massive tourism spike this winter?
Level One Flight Status From USA
Only in the last few days, the United States government announced that Mexico’s aviation safety rating has been increased to the highest level, two years after being demoted to Category 2.
This means Mexican airlines are now permitted to increase routes to the U.S, as well as American airline companies selling tickets on Mexican airline-operated flights.
“The connectivity between Mexico and the United States is one of the most important in the world and contributes significantly to the social and economic development of the country,” stated International Air Transport Association (IATA) Regional Vice President Peter Cerda.
The decrease to Category 2 certainly affected the post-pandemic recovery of the country, and now along with the surging popularity of the destination taking hold, so too will the popularity of all new flights and routes on offer for tourists.
The Long Awaited New Maya Train
One huge investment in infrastructure is about to launch at the end of this year and seems to be on everyone’s lips.
The highly anticipated Maya Train, which looks to connect travelers all over the Mexican Caribbean, is expected to have its inaugural journey at the beginning of December.
The route, in particular, is said to cover 34 stations, 7 nearby airports and 26 archeological zones, stopping in a whopping five different states.
The Maya Train is set to be a true feat of engineering and confirmation that governments are keen to continue to expand and offer more for tourists looking for the perfect vacation.
Andrés Manuel López Obrador stated, “To guarantee a safe and calm travel experience for all passengers wanting to enjoy the Maya Train, the route will have surveillance by land and air; on board the wagons, patrols on tracks and overflights of drones and aircraft, in addition to surveillance at stations, plus archeological zones and airports.”
The train’s mission is not only to connect tourists to hugely popular tourist attractions and transport links but also aims to protect the environment and preserve archaeological sites and nature reserves.
New Tulum International Airport
Another huge opening this year will be the new Tulum International Airport, also known as Felipe Carillo Puerto, which is expected to become an incredibly busy and popular option for tourists.
The airport is expected to take off some of the pressure from Cancun International Airport, which sees as many as 500 flights a day, making it one of the busiest in the world.
Popular airlines such as Aeromexico have already announced flights to the airport from popular cities such as Toronto, San Francisco and Chicago, and will be flying directly to the Riviera Maya, meaning Americans and Canadians alike will be more connected than ever to the Mexican Caribbean.
Now, with the Category 1 flight safety status and connections via the Maya Train from the new state-of-the-art airport, these three developments alone will act as clockwork for a huge increase in tourist activity in the coming months.
The Growing Popularity of Nearby Areas
More and more less well-known areas are also becoming popular choices for tourists, such as Isla Mujeres and Bacalar.
The two destinations have the coveted status of ‘Magical Town’, which is awarded for having noteworthy cultural or historical elements, stunning natural scenery, and thriving culture.
Isla Mujeres is one of the top island destinations to explore in North America, which holds the title of Blue Flag beaches, as well as being home to some incredible native wildlife(having just celebrated a record-breaking whale shark season this year).
Bacalar is another top destination for tourists, dripping in history and culture dating back to the 18th century, as well as being home to incredible lagoons and colorful wildlife; the most well-known area being the Lagoon of 7 Colors, which varies and changes into different shades of blue and is a must see!
Both of these areas are situated extremely close to the ever-popular destination of Cancun and are perfect for day trips and even longer stays.
It is certain that the Mexican Caribbean shows no sign of stopping when it comes to its tourism boom this year, and with connectivity for tourists being a huge priority, it seems as though it will be experiencing another peak season this winter!
