There has been much buzz around the highly anticipated Tulum International Airport this year, which is set to begin operations in December.
After VivaAerobus announced on Thursday that they would begin scheduled flights from Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, and Tijuana, Aeromexico revealed yesterday that they will start flights departing from the United States and Canada.
Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport is set to open ahead of schedule in Tulum, Quintana Roo, which is just one of several new projects being built in the southeast of the country on the eve of the inauguration of the Mayan train.
This summer has just seen another record-breaking year for tourism in the area and could possibly be the greatest year on record if the statistics in the Mexican Caribbean continue.
Cancun International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world, seeing more than 500 flights a day arriving and departing through its airspace, and it was only a matter of time before another airport was put in place to ease saturation levels and help with the ever-growing demand.
Aeromexico has announced it will be scheduling 14 domestic flights to Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport from Toronto, San Francisco and Chicago and will be flying directly to the Riviera Maya, just in time for winter vacation time; high season in the Mexican Caribbean.
The company stated, “This decision reinforces the presence of Aeromexico in the state of Quintana Roo, where the airline offers connectivity and the best service to and from Cancun, Chetumal, Cozumel, and now Tulum, with a total offer of more than 221, 000 seats per month, which represent an increase of 6% compared to the current operation.”

This will be a hugely exciting development for American tourists, who make up about a third of international visitors who travel to the region, with Tulum placing itself as a close second destination to the ever-popular Cancun.
Aeromexico confirmed that itineraries and tickets will become available in the coming days and will be expected to see bookings soar with the popular airline, as many Americans will be planning ahead for their winter vacation time.
A much-trusted company, Aeromexico in the period between January – June 2023, saw 8,442,152 domestic passengers in 75,822 operations, positioning itself as the third largest airline operator in the domestic market in Mexico.
With the airport currently under construction, the pressure will be on to finish its completion, with airlines and their passengers awaiting eagerly for the all-clear.
The Mexican Army will administer the airport, which saw an investment of $48 million, and will likely have the capacity to serve 5.5 million passengers and receive up to 32,000 yearly operations.
The current airspace sits at Air Safety Category 2, given by the United States Federal Administration, meaning new direct flights are currently not allowed from American Union cities. However, since Aeromexico has a codeshare with Delta Air Lines, they will be able to offer direct flights.
If Tulum International Airport is to be a commercial success, it will need to regain its Category 1 rating, which will inevitably lead to more flights from America’s most popular cities.
Jose Zapata, America’s Vice President of Sales Mexico, stated, “As the flag carrier of Mexico, we are happy to participate in the inauguration of this air terminal because, in addition to being a great airport facility, many of our customers have Tulum and the south of the Riviera Maya as their final designation, which is an international benchmark for the wealth of tourism that our country offers.”

If all goes to plan, Tulum Airport will be coming into operation just as another highly anticipated project plans to open in the region, with the Mayan train looking to connect tourists all throughout the region, from connecting airports as well some of the most visited and sought after locations for all its passengers.
One thing is certain: As tourism shows no sign of slowing down in the Mexican Caribbean, government authorities are responding with deep and meaningful action to help and grow offerings for tourists and ensure they all get the vacation they have been dreaming of.

This is very disappointing to hear. I have been going there since the early 2000’s. Tulum used to be a jewel in paradise, an oasis for serenity, a place to escape crowds, the rat race, a place to relax and disappear, off the radar and a place to rejuvenate. However ever since there has been more access this has led to increased crime, trash, crowds, traffic with this the essence of Tulum has been lost. I used to go to Tulum REGULARLY to get away from the tourist vibe of the Cancuns, Montego Bays, San Juans. It had a simple charm which was magnified by the yogaesque mentality and lifestyle. Once I saw clubs and bottle service I knew Tulum was changing. Some may like this new version of Tulum and good for you, but for me there are many places like this that already existed. It has now lost its uniqueness as a hidden paradise… on to the next discovery..
