Tulum is the name on everyone’s lips these days, and it’s no surprise why.
The destination has been a major hotspot for tourists for many years now, but thanks to a new international airport and the new Maya Train, its popularity is set to explode in 2024.
Bookings for hotels have seen an annual occupancy increase of 4 percent from 2023, and that number is only expected to grow this year.
Complete with trendy, boho-chic cafes, stunning beaches and even world-famous archeological sites, Tulum is the up and coming place to be and we want to uncover why.
Tulum International Airport
Coming from humble beginnings as a small fishing village into the wellness resort destination that it is today, Tulum has always been slightly more challenging to reach than its popular counterpart, Cancun.
In times gone by, tourists would have to fly into Cancun Airport before making their own way to Tulum via taxi, private hire, or bus service; not the most convenient way to get to your destination after a flight, and certainly not the cheapest option either.

That all changed as of December 2023, however, when the new Felipe Carrillo International Airport was inaugurated, hailed to be “a magnificent opportunity to discover the wonders of the Maya World” by the governor of Quintana Roo, Mara Lezama Espinosa.
With a passenger capacity of 5.5 million passengers annually, and the most popular airlines offering more routes and competitive pricing, such as Delta, American, Spirit and many more, travelers will be flocking to Tulum in no time.
New Maya Train Route
If you haven’t heard yet, the Yucatan Peninsula has also gained a new state-of-the-art transport system called the Maya Train, which is connecting the entire region for tourists and locals.
With some routes already in operation, the most anticipated route from Cancun to Tulum is set to begin operations on February 29th.
Offering a much more affordable option to travel and allowing tourists to experience all the hidden gems that Tulum and its surrounding areas have to offer, this billion-dollar infrastructure project is making the region more connected than ever and, with it, set to bring more and more people to its doorstep.

New Free Public Wi-Fi for Tourists
Tulum is also growing its connectivity in another way as well; introducing free public wifi in the popular areas of the city.
With the trend of remote working and digital nomadism showing no sign of slowing down, officials are responding to the needs of tourists who expect high-speed internet from any well-known travel destination; after all, it has the workspaces and cool coffee shops to match.
Allowing guests to reach a download speed of 200 megabytes, as well as to work from major public areas like beaches and shopping malls, Tulum is only going to grow its trendy reputation even more and not only be a destination for vacationers but digital nomads as well.
Enhanced Safety Measures
As Tulum grows ever more popular, so too do its safety concerns, with the U.S. Department of State advising ‘increased caution’ while traveling due to a higher level of crime.
Though this does not usually directly affect tourists and is more often linked to organized crime and drug-related crime, it is still worth being cautious.
Thankfully, during peak times during the winter, spring, and summer breaks, major hotspots like Tulum enhance their safety measures in order to give tourists peace of mind when traveling.
With everything from increased patrols on beaches to armored vehicles on busy tourist roads and shopping areas and even more CCTV than ever before, tourists can rest assured that their safety is in good hands when choosing Tulum.
That being said, certain precautions like avoiding walking alone at night, not having your phone out, and refraining from showing off expensive items like handbags and watches are still advised.
Petty crime exists in most tourist areas, so it is always best to keep your wits about you.
Hidden Gems Galore
Though Tulum is joining the ranks of other major tourist hotspots like Cancun and Playa del Carmen, the destination is still host to a whole load of hidden gems in its surrounding areas and is absolutely worth a visit if you choose to visit.
From the ancient Mayan ruins that sit atop a cliffside, dating back well over 1,500 years ago, to the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, the largest protected area on Mexico’s Caribbean coast that is home to a whole host of endangered creatures and some stunning landscapes, you are never going to run out of fun things to see and explore.
