The excitement of the Maya Train being completed has been building with the opening of each section that has been inaugurated since the first one on December 15th, 2023.
The most recent section to be inaugurated was the northern portion of Section 5, which takes travelers between the two popular destinations of Cancun and Playa del Carmen.
Only days later, though, the Cancun to Playa del Carmen Maya Train route is still not operational, despite the recent inauguration.
Here’s what’s being reported on this much-anticipated route.
The Inauguration Of The Cancun To Playa Del Carmen Route
The inauguration of the Cancun to Playa del Carmen Maya Train route took place on February 29th.
The Mexican President and other important figures were present for the celebration.
Unfortunately, no trips have been offered to the public since the inauguration.

Continuing Construction
According to reports, both the road leading to and the Playa del Carmen station itself, are still under construction.
Furthermore, it appears that only part of the track for Section 5 of the Maya Train route is operational.
The delay is likely partially caused by the controversy that has surrounded this section and the actions of those who oppose the project due to environmental concerns.

Ticket prices for international tourists are priced at $11.57 for Tourist Class and $18.50 for Premier Class.
As for the schedule, the one that was announced includes three trains departing daily from both Cancun and Playa del Carmen.
The times are 9 am, 12 pm, and 3 pm, and 10:30 am, 1:30 pm, and 4:30 pm, respectively.

When To Expect The Section 5 Route To Be Operational
There have not yet been any further announcements on an expected date that the route will be operational.
According to reports, even workers are unsure about a starting date.
It was previously announced that the southern part of Section 5 would be completed by August, and if that’s true, the Cancun to Playa del Carmen route would have to be completed first.
A Much Anticipated Route For Many Reasons
Cancun and Playa del Carmen are two of the most popular vacation destinations in the Mexican Caribbean.
Most travelers visiting Playa del Carmen fly into Cancun Airport and then spend an hour, and nearly $100 or more, to get between the two cities.
It goes without saying, then, that the Cancun to Playa del Carmen Maya Train route is one of the most anticipated because it offers a faster and cheaper option.
Other Sections Of The Maya Train That Are Operational
You may not be able to take the Maya Train from Cancun to Playa del Carmen yet, but you can use this new revolutionary way to travel the Mexican Caribbean to visit other amazing places.
The route from Cancun to Merida is actually the most popular route in operation right now, and has many note-worthy places to visit along the way.
A few of these are the city of Merida itself, as well as the Magic Towns of Izamal and Valladolid, and the fascinating Chichen Itza Mayan archeological site.
The Future Of Travel Once The Maya Train Is Complete
Moving at speeds of around 100 miles per hour and costing a fraction of what other modes of transportation do, the Maya Train will revolutionize travel in the Mexican Caribbean.
Tourists will be able to travel the entire coast and the Yucatan Peninsula quickly and for an affordable price.
This is why so many travelers are eagerly waiting for its completion.
